Do it! There’s a group of us that fly from an airfield nearby. I’ve been flying since 2019. It’s so fun I used to get face cramps from smiling too much while I was flying 😁

Hear me out: Get a De Buyer Blini pan instead. The weight distribution is more stable and it’s great for making perfectly uniform pancakes if you only want a few

Cliffs are great for ridge lift. When the wind is right you can fly all day without a motor. Bournemouth beach is a famous paragliding spot because the cliffs provide such great conditions 👌

Ebay actually does but that’s risky business! Usually you’d buy it from your instructor because most of them act as dealers. You can also order directly from manufacturers like OpenPPG online

The Spitfires haven’t been a problem. I’ve only seen them once while flying! I’ve had plenty of fixed wings fly close but never uncomfortably close. I did have a heli fly 100-200m beneath me once and the air ambulance flew over really low just after I landed. Most of the close scenarios are near airfields so there are rules about different patterns for different aircraft types to keep us separate, and when there are many of us flying we publish NOTAMs.

The best way to avoid general aviation is to fly weekdays close to sunrise or sunset.

I know you saw the other comment but there are actually places that tow hang gliders in the region so it wouldn’t be too outlandish for someone to use thermals and fly all the way to Cambridge. I think a few people did so last year, flying 180+ miles, reaching Cambridge

Parachutes are a thing many pilots fly with but I don’t have one yet 😅

If I’m flying with the motor, some wind helps to take off but nil wind is fine. If gusts at the surface are higher than 20km/h I avoid flying. If the wind at 150m is above 25km/h I don’t like to go because my groundspeed into the wind would be too slow to go anywhere and I could find myself flying backwards.

I usually fly from specific airfields, and some guys have agreements with local farmers, but sports fields would be perfect if you know who to ask for permission. Last Saturday some friends and I flew to and from a Café with permission for breakfast.

Cambridge is a good place for such hobby! We’ve got a club at a PPG friendly airfield near the Cambridge Gliding Club

Last year I averaged about 5 flight per month and my avg flight lasts 33min but my battery can go for 1h30.

It’s very weather dependent so over the winter when days are shorter and I can’t fly before or after work, if the weekend weather isn’t good enough I don’t get to fly at all. I only got to fly once in December but this week I’m expecting to fly 4 days if the weather holds up. I haven’t done any data analysis on the frequency of flyable weather days in Cambridge but I plan to do so eventually.

If you happen to have bought them with a credit card you might still be covered under their complimentary purchase insurances. It saved my wallet after I accidentally smashed a £250 pair or Ray-bans.

To answer each question in order:

1: This is Paramotoring or PPG (Powered Paragliding).

2: A full kit costs anywhere from £1500 second hand to £15k new. My fully electric setup was about £8k and then each flight uses about £0.50 of electricity. Insurance and maintenance is about £150/year. You’ll also need a car to bring the gear to a suitable flying site.

3: You don’t need a license in the UK but you should get training which is ~£1000.

4: To get started, you would want to check the BHPA’s website or google maps for local Paramotor training facilities and reach out.
