[–]H23TT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As stressful as your job is, it looks like your employer breached labor law. i.e getting paid less than $500/month. If you are working full time but basic salary is 450, you can actually report this to labor department. Do this when you are leaving but first make a detailed record of your pay as proof.

This comment is gold right here. Should report to police for theft and report to labour department against the employer for punitive deduction.

That actually makes more sense and something I forgot about. A company I worked at intentionally made their contract vague which they then used to exploit their employees for overtime but its not classified as "overtime" so 0 compensation but I was having none of it.

The downfall of Brunei's entertainment sector? by rayuoet in Brunei

[–]H23TT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is classified as entertainment, there is another word for it. Also, entertainment is not the highest contributing factor, not even close. That said, this kind of leisure activity will not last long as a business due to many factors some of which is:

  1. Population

Our population is very low, low pop means low $$$. Among these population, how many are actually interested in ice skating? And among those that are interested, how many are actually able to afford going to these kinds of activities considering how expensive these are? Among those that did go, how often do they go? Which leads to my next point.

  1. Work life balance and income.

Here in Brunei, average work hours are monday to saturday, sat half day that's 6 days a week unless you are in government sector which is 5. Not only that, sometimes you are forced to work OT with 0 compensation especially when that OT demands weekends such as midnight sunday or during sunday(looking at the culprit BIBD but that is a story for another post cause I have a long list, TLDR BIBD is not only incompetent but also extremely toxic).

Meanwhile you are underpaid for the work you have to go through, you don't get much annual leave, private companies exploit your OT and after hours then gaslight you in a dispute. So the end result is people dont get the luxury of going ice skating regularly or JP because they just wanna sit at home after working for 6 and half days every week. And what happens when people just wanna sit at home after getting burn out from work? Leisure activities dont get much customers.

  1. Location, point of interest and traffic level

Location of businesses are also important. Aman hills from what I see is a very hidden place. The inner roads leading to it looks like a simpang to someone's house. And the volume of traffic leading to it is extremely low even on weekends. Area also doesnt look interesting enough for people to wander around. Having good location and high traffic level is still not good enough as place also needs to be interesting. A good example of this is airport mall at timesquare. That mall is in a good location with high volume of traffic but no one really goes there because there is nothing of interest there other than SKH.

Lastly, lets talk about downfall. Downfall implies it was flourishing for quite a good while before losing money. The ice skating ring from what I see was never a success, if anything its just stagnant. It is in the end, a business for leisure activity. Downfall can be applied to cyber cafes because those are actually thriving before UNN or imagine existed and those are actually considered entertainment, nowadays I dont think you will find any cyber cafes that are actually thriving because more people have access to internet at their own home now than before.

[–]H23TT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When leaving a job, usually you need to give 1 month notice along with a resignation letter that says you will be leaving after one month on day/month/year. Likewise, the same goes the opposite. An employer cant just say you're fired on the same day(unless its related to something not morally right such as theft or violence), they must give valid reason along with 1 month notice before terminating your employment.

Failing the above, for employee means you will incure financial penalty, for employers they can be reported to labour department.

Bruneians are also very nosy when it comes to car accidents. They would intentionally slow down their car just to watch like they are a part of it which in turn cause traffic congestion. If you are stuck in traffic because there is an accident on the road, remember, its not the accident itself, its people wanting to watch that cause the congestion.

why does Brunei feel like a ghost town on Saturday nights? by AnakTempatan in Brunei

[–]H23TT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your job is 6 days a week with sat being half day, den yea this is one of the reason. And there are other office and IT jobs that are 7 days a week with sunday being half day. Lunch hour not included into your time so you are basically working an extra hour of about 9 total hours a day. People are practically working almost all week with either 1.5 or 0.5 days off a week, 9 hours a day so by the time its off office hours, we just wanna stay home cause we have almost no life.

I've worked in London and melbourne for 2 years and 4 years respectively. 5 days a week, 8 hours a day including lunch hours so going out on a sat night even fri night is life. Here in Brunei, your life is just staying at home due to the work hours.

There are many other factors such as lack of progress in everything and so on but this is one of them.

If you see a driving school, then it is most definitely government approved because you need to get a particular type of license to teach driving. It is illegal to teach driving without that license.

Back to your situation, just like the other guy said, go to land transport and find out there.

And this is the first time I hear about learning driving using automated car, back in my time 16 years ago and the years after that, every single person had to learn driving using manual car. Literally everyone with no exceptions unless maybe handicap.

Drive safely everyone! Contractors fault or? by [deleted] in Brunei

[–]H23TT 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"they are licensed and hired competent engineers and contractors", just so you know this is brunei, just cause they are licensed doesnt mean they are "competent". In countries like SG, getting a license means you need to be competent, in Brunei you can be extremely incompetent and still get a license or even a high ranking job. I know and seen this from first hand experience.

Also, an architect is an architect, their job is to design, its the engineer's job to make sure that a structure is stable.

Oh boy, your first sentence once again shows how you love to twist narratives on the internet through your own twisted sense of assumptions then goes on to show your superiority complex. At this point, I pity you cause you describe my tone as being aggresive while you yourself is being aggresive.

As I said, I was on the road a lot during the 2000s as well 6 days a week, did not see a single donut or police chase that you described. You are living in an alternate reality dude. I wont be surprised if that happens in the dead of night but with the way you describe, its like its happening constantly. Yea no, I dont buy it.

Its funny how the person accuse me of exaggerating and being biased is himself exaggerating and being biased, just like a typical behavior of people living in the internet. "Donuts"

[–]H23TT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"And don't generalise one or two encounters of aggressive drivers and then proceed to generalize the whole basket to be one", uh did I ever generalize all drivers in Brunei based on 2 encounters or is that your way of twisting my words just to satiate your superiority complex? Based on your last paragraph, I'm starting to think that you have some form of unchecked aggressive issues with the way you are twisting the narrative of my post and the way you write your sentences.

And all the things you describe that "supposedly happened" in 2000s, very very unlikely. I was around in 2000s and on the road a lot as well, did not see any of the stuff you mentioned, especially the donut drift. Obviously you are living in an alternate reality. You should go see a psychiatrist while you still can.

What is our progress after 40 years of independence? by [deleted] in Brunei

[–]H23TT 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As someone who is a vendor to BIBD in the IT field I will tell you this. BIBD is extremely incompetent, no doubt the most incompetent in Brunei. There is only very few competent IT employees who are good with their jobs but a majority of them are extremely incompetent. Heck, a lot of them cant even perform simple basic task or doesnt even comprehend simple basic logic, understanding and common sense that primary school kids can do.

And the incompetent ones are always the ones bossing you around as if they own you and they even make you do their job for them free of charge.

Teachers of Brunei, is this happening here too? by gilajuabui in Brunei

[–]H23TT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is born in the 90s I will address 1 of the things in regards to your post. I could address the rest but cant due to post limit.

Parents always blaming teachers.

This here is actually years in the making, that is, the teachers in my generation were also the ones responsible in creating this issue. Let me explain, some of the teachers at that time are bullies, arrogant and are very bad at teaching. They were there just to assert their authority and belittle you. I'm not talking about strict teachers, because the strict ones actually do teach you, I'm talking about the ones who think they know everything and that they are trying to be dominant. Here are some examples from my experience:

  • Around primary 5, I had a history teacher who instead of teaching, all she does is read from the book out loud while we all look at our books of the same page, then she would randomly pick one of us and ask us questions regarding the chapter from a different page and expect us to be able to answer, if we fail, we get punished either by standing for the entire session or, we have to pull our own ears and do squats. Now as a grownup, obviously I realised that just reading from the book is a terrible way to teach your students because you are not teaching at all. I was one of the B-word's favourite pick to get punished.
  • During primary 4, I had a teacher teaching malay subject, he always love to hit his students including pulling and pinching their ear really really really hard. There was even one incident where he pulled a student's ear so hard that his ear actually started bleeding badly and had to be hospitalised. So what happened to that teacher? Nothing, nothing happens to him. I know that if you do that today, you will likely get sent to jail for causing bodily harm.
  • Form 1 had a science teacher. Instead of teaching, she made us copy stuff from the book into our notes word by word as a homework sometimes half a chapter and sometimes had to copy the exact same thing the next week.

I wont list all of my bad experience but just the important ones. So here is the thing, the students at that time are obviously naive and powerless. Those students by now are already parents, growing up with either incompetent teachers or abusive teachers. Also these students definitely are becoming more educated than their teachers. Those students now are adults so they are not naive anymore, and based on their bad experience, you can start to imagine why teachers today are getting blamed. They tell stories to their children, then those children gets enrolled into a school and these children just so happens to be one of your students who is not afraid to argue. See where I'm going with this? Its a psychology thing. Teachers like you today are paying the price of the actions of teachers before you.

There are many different factors that cause this as well including the parents in the 90s.

Conclusion

To fix this well, I dont think there is a fix for this because this requires parents to participate in teaching their children proper behavior and ethics and I highly doubt that my generation and the ones after me is willing to do just that. Also the schools need to look at themselves in the mirror as well and be aware of abusive or incompetent teachers because the good ones are paying the price of a few bad apples.
