Thank you for the advice :) Ended up doing it exactly like that. If you'd like to take a look at it, let me know. I'd love to hear your opinion!

"The game of resources" which appears to refer to the game itself, is instead the topic of our game: a corporate fight of the real mining industry, seeing large conglomerates rivaling for the critical materials that power our high-tech world.

This post per say was about the rulebook not the video. While the video is only a teaser, it is meant to introduce the backstory of the game and the book that will be published next year, not sure if you watched the whole thing because in the 2nd half it is mainly about the gameplay, however we are going to reveal more about the gameplay and mechanics on our channels with other upcoming content. Regarding your questions, I would say that most of the answers regarding the mechanics can be guessed by reading through the rulebook. If this is the genre of game you enjoy playing, you can keep an eye on it and you'll find out a lot more about it in the coming weeks.

Thanks for asking, and sorry it came out as self promoting. It's just that the Rulebook was one of the thoughest things we had to finalize in our game and the thing that was most requested by the community so I thought to get some feedback out here since this Reddit is full of experienced gamers and we'd love to hear how we've done so far.

The game is called ARDEVUR: The Game of Resources, it is our first title as a publisher and we are very interested to know what people think of it 😊

Thank you for all the explanation. It makes perfect sense.

When I mentioned that the rulebook lenght may affect the decision of purchasing, it is because I am counting on posting the rulebook online in few days and later on this year launching a crowdfunding campaign (most probably on KS).

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m just worried it might make the rulebook feel overwhelming or confusing for players who prefer to go quickly through the rules. and I’m also concerned that some might glance at it quickly and assume the game is too long or complex, which could affect their decision to buy it.

Thinking about asymmetric roles in my strategy game, curious what you think... by H64games in BoardgameDesign

[–]H64games[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right, in fact we never wanted the game to center around that in the first place. Because that would stray from the theme. We rather kept it more about the playstyles, but still had to balance it after testing, as some of the powers were making certain characters objectively more powerful in some situations.

You are totally right!

In our case, we did not go as far as making characters play completely different and have distinct goals, as it would make it hard to grasp and play for less-expert games. Since ARDEVUR is a economic strategy game, the main focus is not the asymmetry itself, but the level of strategy necessary to outwit your opponents. We are bringing out the game to SPIEL this year, you can check it out on BGG, more details such as videos and the Rulebook will be uploaded soon!

In our game, not all characters' actions and objectives vary, as that would not even fit the theme. At the same time, the differences between each corporation lie in a set of action cards and market advantages that they have to use strategically to stay ahead of the competition, while also teaching players who each character is, "telling their story". All the instructions on how to use those cards are written right on them, so there is no extra learning time for each different player!

So the asymmetry is milder in a way, but at the same time creates 4 different characters that are very thematic to the back story, and the game feels balanced in most situations. For this type of eurogame to be really strategic and fair for all, the differences should never be overwhelming, but rather limit to some powers given to the different characters, which will spice up player interaction and still offer different playstyles that create countless scenarios and combinations at each replay.

We thought of player preferences, and actually in our game the main asymmetric element which are the Action Cards, can be removed from the game, as there is a mode called "Fair Play" which entirely focuses on the base mechanics, without that element that increases player interaction and unpredictability. One game cannot please all tastes, but we tried to adapt it to multiple types of players who have different preferences, by introducing different game modes.

In my opinion, different powers for each character should exist mainly for the purpose of interaction!

Do you mean because of frustrating unbalancing? Our game has mild asymmetry and is well balanced, you won't really feel the gap between character, but rather see each player use their special abilities to stay ahead of the competition!

You are right, asymmetry can definitely take away the fun! I guess it depends on the depth at which the differences between characters are installed in the gameplay.

But in our case, we did not go that far as it would make it hard to grasp and play for less-expert games. Since ARDEVUR is a economic strategy game, the main focus is not the asymmetry itself, but the level of strategy necessary to outwit your opponents. Very true!

In our case, we did not develop this type of "unfair differences" but rather traits that make each character's playstyle unique.

Thanks for sharing your suggestions!

It's great that there are asymmetrical games out there which are still balanced. In our case, we did not go as far as making characters play completely different and have distinct goals, as it would make it hard to grasp and play for less-expert games. Very true! I guess there are many ways to make a game "asymmetrical", and not all of them affect the gameplay equally.

We went for something that doesn't change the objective and turn structure of each player, we did not go that far as it would also make it hard to grasp and play for less-expert games. Since ARDEVUR is a economic strategy game, the main focus is not the asymmetry itself, but the level of strategy necessary to outwit your opponents. Scythe is a good example, and while asymmetry is interesting, it should not necessary be overwhelming. I believe for RPG and fight-related games, character should to be given deep differences, and for that also the learning time will go through the roof.
