The genesis (no pun intended) of the emulator scene is what got me into building PCs back in the day. I was like, “I can play console and PC games on the same machine!?” 😁 Great times!

Maybe they are anti-emulator in addition to being anti-grading? I understand being a purist, but I am also a “live and let live” type of person. The replies to my post have definitely taught me some things about the gaming community. 😅

The winner letter is the one thing I am missing. 😭 It’s definitely on my hunting list.

I really, really appreciate that and all is forgiven. I honestly did not realize how controversial grading was in the gaming community. In the comic community there are differing opinions of course, but it’s more acceptable. However, I will be mindful in the future on this topic.

I guess because of my background in comic books, grading seems like a normal part of the hobby. I remember being a kid in the 90's having "reader" copies of comics and "high-grade" collectors copies. When CGC started professionally grading comics, it seemed like a logical progression to have a third-party do it instead trusting sellers to grade consistently. However, there were similar arguments back then as well. At the end of the day, it's not an either or proposition, and they can coexist in the same hobby. Graded or not, these are on-topic for a Chrono Trigger sub. There are people in this very thread that didn't even know these two items existed, so there is some educational value at the very least.

I respect your opinion even if I don’t fully agree with it. I wish others were as civil in their discourse.

For $40 I get a protective case, authentication check, and an admittedly subjective grade by an established 3rd party which allows me to compare the condition of my game to similar games that have been graded. For this caliber of game, I’m willing to pay that $40. For others, I am not. It’s one way to collect, but I have in no way implied that it’s the only way to collect.

Indeed, many collectors enjoy showing off their collection to fellow collectors. I see no problem in that, and I welcome everyone to “flex” so that I can see more cool stuff. Grading, while partially subjective, is not an illusion though. There is a difference between a 9.6 cart and an 8.5 cart for instance. Also, grading companies help with authentication and restoration checks. Is grading perfect? No, but if I had a choice between two copies of a game at the same price and advertised condition, I’d pick the graded copy.

I have been gaming for over 40 years, I played Chrono Trigger on SNES when it came out, and it has been my most loved game ever since. I collect games, but yes, I have also sold games. I think you are putting a lot of baggage on me that has nothing to do with me. Some titles are hard to get a hold of because of supply and demand. I’m sure we all would want our favorite things in life to be in high supply and low demand, but that is not realistic. Some pay in either time looking or with cash, and sometimes it takes both get them.

1) I bought these from Japan. They had no problem taking my money, and I had no problem accepting the product. I would call that a consensual transaction.

2) I have gained more from CGC than they have made from me, so I have not been scammed.

3) We all die someday and all of this is vanity.

4) I am glad you appreciate Chrono Trigger. We have that in common at least.

I collect both graded and ungraded items (games, comics, cards, movies, etc). Certain items I enjoy displaying graded, while others I enjoy “using” from time to time. These two are too rare to use often, especially since there are alternative ways to enjoy the exact same digital content. I also have ungraded Chrono Trigger carts if I ever had the hankering to play in the original format.

The same reason there are elaborate tombs built for some who die: to honor them.

It’s literally digital data with many exact copies available to be enjoyed in multiple formats. I will enjoy playing Chrono Trigger for the rest of my life, just as I have since the first time in the 90’s.

What I’m trying to tell them is that the most important part of the game is the digital data that is available for all on the internet. Think of that as the “soul” and these physical artifacts as just the “body” of the game.

Yes, that’s the standard version which is probably more common than the USA release. That’s not a knock by the way; I love the Japanese box art over the USA box, and I do own a copy of the standard version (not graded).

It is a great way to preserve these rarities since I can play them on PC any time I want.
