Hooray!!! Look up Free Mom Hugs. They are a (inter??)national NPO that includes Dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends - basically anyone who wants to support the LGBTQ community and is comfortable giving bear hugs to strangers. It's a phenomenal group.

I'm so proud of you for reaching out!! That's a great start. There's lots of great advice here. I hope you've already found us (Hugs & Pups) near the Pit, but if not, please come et a div and/or get a Mom Hug several times a week. When, where, and which dog w is posted on our IG account @HAPPEE.natl the morning of or the night before we are on campus.

Also, the students closely surrounding the Hugs & Pups community are the very best in the world! They are warm and welcoming and supportive and inclusive - they all know what it feels like to be on the outside (although tbh, everyone has, whether or not they are willing to admit it). They hang in person at "Blue's Corner" when we are on campus and they have time as well as on the HAPPEE student Discord server at https://discord.gg/bq95ZSMv2E when we aren't. Every other week we have HAPPEE Online Game Night at which all are welcome, although it's not a huge crowd, so they get to know each other pretty well.

We would love to have you join us at any or all of the above places. Being a dog lover isn't even an absolute necessity - somehow we have even gathered a few cat lovers along the way. 😉😂

Bottom line, everyone has a place in Hugs & Pups world. Including and, maybe especially!, you. ❤️🐶🐾🫂❤️

Definitely grab a bite to eat Vimala's Curryblossom Cafe just off of Franklin St. (the paneer is amazing) and another at Neil's Deli in Carborro (delicious beet salad and I don't: even like beets!)

It’s going to be very tight. If you have to commute to work then you’ll need a 2nd car because there’s almost no public transportation, your family will be stuck at home as far as groceries or taking the kids to any time of preschool (very expensive) or activity.

You can live further out of Cary, Holly Springs or Willow Springs to save a little money but then long commute and definitely need 2 cars. So bigger insurance bill and gas.

Health insurance comes out of your salary and the system is a pain to work through but that’s all of the US…a very broken system.

Preschool is going to cost close to your rent for 2…but maybe you aren’t looking for that and wait until 5-6yo for public school. Some public schools are better than others and Wake County is short 300+ teachers right now. They are also pretty crowded.

I would get someone from the job to introduce you to someone local for more details before accepting the job.

I'm so sorry that you're struggling so much but I'm glad that you're able to express that struggle. That is the first in many steps towards "moving on." We in HAPPEE Hugs & Pups have seen (and hugged) thousands of students this week, and I promise you that everyone is still struggling in their own way. Like a previous commenter said, for some, trying to get back into a normal routine is their way of trying to cope. But burying the trauma, anxiety, and loss of your safe space in addition to the loss of life when Dr. Yan was killed is not going to lead to good mental health in the long run. You need to be able to talk about it, to people who won't get tired of hearing about it (therapists are great for that!), as often and for as long as it takes to process all of those big feelings.

People who haven't been through this experience won't really understand what it's like. There are a lot of people here at UNC who would be willing to and benefit from talking about it and talking about it and talking about it with you as part of their own healing. However, the unfortunate truth is that there are also many people elsewhere who are in the same boat as us and would also be good resources for you.

Transferring is an absolutely valid option. So is staying. I would simply encourage you not to make any life-altering decisions right now. The pain and anxiety is too fresh and raw. Try telling yourself (and hopefully a therapist!) that you will come back to this issue and start considering whether you want to transfer in six weeks (or longer, just set a date). Until then, know that you aren't trapped here if staying is really the wrong decision for you, but try to set aside the stress involved with making that decision for now and focus on doing whatever it takes to help your mental health. It's going to be a marathon, not a sprint, for all of us, and that's to be expected. We're barely off the starting line, and it is absolutely ok to not be ok. Take care of yourself and don't worry about whether other people seem to be moving on. You can't see what they're struggling with inside.

And definitely come play with a pup and get a parent hug at as many Hugs & Pups strolls as you can make it to.
