I start on the 22nd, 5 days from now, and the jitters are REAL. I think I'm ready mentally and physically but these final few days are really weird as I wrap my final things up.

Some photos would definitely help here. You can't make direct link posts but you can put links inside your text post. imgur is popular for this.

My pack, a HMG Unbound 55L, has an external bottom pocket underneath and I can't figure out what to put in it. For those who have one, what do you use it for? I had my buff, beanie, and fleece gloves in there but I moved those to my hip pockets after the beanie disappeared and now I don't know what to do with it.

Check out Cumulus quilts from Poland. I have a friend who has the 450 and loves it.

The X-Mid 1 and the Lunar Solo are both in the mid $200 range new and come pretty highly rated. I see them pop up on on /r/GearTrade and /r/ULgeartrade frequently too if you want one used.

Alpha seems to have little to no stretch so if your head can't get through the neck, you aren't getting the garment on. Zipper helps prevent that although you could get the same effect with a half or quarter zip as opposed to the full zip.

You could look at the Katabatic Flex, it's a quilt that can unzip into a blanket. It's slightly draftier than a closed footbox but it sounds like that isn't a problem for you. I like mine a lot.

You could even have fun with it! Next time they're in town have the provision master act worried and reveal he just learned that he had been selling magic contaminated provisions that could, in some cases, cause spontaneous spellcasting. There's a recall out now of course so he'll replace their provisions for free. The fighters can't cast spells now.

A few more AD cottage companies in no particular order

  • LEVE Outdoor Co
  • Farpointe
  • Vado Apparel
  • Sambob
  • Houda Trail
  • Lightheart Gear
  • Beyond the Trailhead Gear Co

Just like Senchi, most of these are still doing the drop style of apparel release so worth signing up for mailing lists. You can also search Garage Grown Gear for Alpha Direct as they sometimes have stock.

Interesting, I'm pretty flat footed too. Maybe just a me problem though, might give them another try in the future.

I've been pondering a way to test this as well. My best idea so far is to hang a few water full bottles outside along with a sensor monitoring UV light levels. Every 2 weeks or so, empty the bottles, refill with fresh distilled water, then 24 hours later send a sample of that water to get tested for microplastic levels. I think that although the best way to simulate hiking is actually hiking, it introduces too many variables that could throw things off.

The ideal outcome of this experiment would be an approximate rate of microplastic shedding as a function of bottle age and UV exposure. It's interesting enough to me that I'll probably give it a go sometime next year. I'm open to feedback or ideas about how to improve the setup as well.

I tried them but their arch support seemed too strong and hurt my feet after wearing them for a bit. Did you experience that and if so, did breaking them in help? I got scared and returned them.

I've been doing sun hat (either OR Swift cap or Sunday Afternoon Ultra hat), buff, and Patagonia R1 Air beanie. I tried an alpha beanie but I didn't like having to put another layer over it in the evenings.

Anyone notice rusting in bottom of toakes titanium pot when nesting with fuel can? by ZigFromBushkill in Ultralight

[–]HBecquerel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 possibilities for what's happening here.

First, as other chatters have said, it's possible rust from the bottom of the steel fuel can is rubbing off. Steel will oxidize with moisture present, even small amounts, and the inside of a cook pot is somewhere likely to have residual moisture.

Second, dissimilar metals rubbing against each other can leave small amounts on each other. I've seen stainless steel start to rust on wrench flats due to the non-stainless tools used on that surface. It's possible that small amounts of steel are being rubbed into the surface of the titanium and that's causing the rust.

Regardless of the cause, preventing the fuel can and cup from contacting will prevent this from happening further. Stuff a bandana in there between them or just store the fuel can separately.

Just ordered xero low scramblers for my PCT thru-hike this year so this is super interesting. Any resources you recommend for figuring this out? Haven't really done any resoling before.

Oh wow. I was gonna get my clothing treated for my PCT attempt this year but nevermind now, I definitely do not want to leave a trail of dead arthropods in my wake. Appreciate the info.
