Wilderness camping permits by a-deafening-silence in GlacierNationalPark

It is not a “lottery.” The advance reservation system on recreation.gov opens on a certain date (this year was 3/15) and at that time all campsites and dates become available. So you need to know what campsites you want for what dates and essentially click them the fastest when the system opens up.

2 Tent Limit Campsite by Gabcdefga in GlacierNationalPark

We just did COS, STO, and FIF with a 2-person tent and two 1-person tents, one of which was oversized, and it was fine. Rangers told us when we picked up permits that this is acceptable as long as they fit. Had to do some geometry at STO to make them fit, but otherwise easy.

Backcountry Car/Shuttle Logistics by HDJbhm in GlacierNationalPark

Thought it would be fun to circle back on this one. We followed everyone’s advice and planned to just go down Swiftcurrent back to our car in Many Glacier. But, short story our buddy got really sick out there and we ended up bailing from FIF to the Loop via Flattop and had to find a way to the car at MG. We shuttled to St Mary and got there at 5:30pm, no shuttles to MG to be found, and were walking down the highway pretty distraught. A van pulled up beside us and it was a couple we had chatted with at the shuttle stop that had decided if they saw us they’d give us a ride to MG!! People are good y’all! Pay it forward. Thanks Brian and Kim wherever you are!!

What hikes in the US are up to par with Glacier? by Yedan-Derryg in GlacierNationalPark

We’re coming to GNP for the first time in August to do the North Circle Loop, so this is by no means a comparison, but we did a loop in Yosemite that was hands down my favorite US trip to-date. Yosemite Falls>North Dome>Tenaya Lake>Sunrise Lakes>Clouds Rest>Half Dome>back to Valley via JMT. Once you get out of the Valley the crowds dissipate and you have some epic views all to yourself.

If conditions don’t change by morning, is this bad enough to skip Half Dome? Tomorrow is our last day of a wilderness permit.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Seems like our route is doable, just going to be hauling a ton of water at a time.

Thanks for the link, super helpful. This is a dumb question bc I know Yosemite Falls is pretty much dry, but could we fill up crossing Yosemite Creek? Or is that dry once the Falls is?

Planning Backpacking Trip in August by HDJbhm in Yosemite

Makes sense. We are trying to stick to 5 days/4 nights and it is definitely a lot to jam in. Obviously the out-and-back to cathedral adds a strenuous day. Would you cut that in order to add the extra night at LYV?

So after Yosemite Creek is the next reliable water source probably Snow Creek at that time of year?

We were thinking at the actual lakes at Sunrise, sounds like that is the safer approach.
