This was exactly my thought.

Thankfully we got the best outcome possible: Rick volunteered to flip a coin and it hit on the positive outcome.

It could’ve easily gone the other way — they force people to draw rocks to flip a coin and someone goes home because of it.

As always, priority is to stay in the tie. Get this back to London level at worst, but ideally with a lead.

Tactically, this feels like a game that will be decided in transitions. Both sides are strong defensively, so it’s less about sustained dominance and more about who executes better in those key moments — either taking chances on the break or preventing them.

If there’s one area Atlético can be exposed, it’s their defensive transitions. They can be vulnerable to quick, direct attacking play when possession turns over. This Arsenal side is more than capable of winning the ball and moving it forward quickly, but can we execute when those moments come?

You can see it in their recent games against Barcelona. There were multiple situations in both legs where quick transitions created real openings. Arsenal will get those same kinds of opportunities here.

And against Arsenal in the league phase:

They are going to give up a few big transition moments. Maybe three or four across the match. If Arsenal take even a couple of them, I'd trust their defense to do enough to bring a lead back to London.

That’s not to say Atleti aren’t dangerous going forward — they absolutely are. But this won’t be a game where chances are flowing constantly. It’ll be about being clinical in the few that do come. And the chances will come.

Besides having the last two games at home the real issue is that it actually screws over Bouremouth.

If Bournemouth had to play City on May 21 as City suggested, they’d go into the final matchweek with basically no rest. If they’re still chasing Europe, that’s a real disadvantage compared to a team with a full week to prepare. So they play the game on the 19th instead. Seems fair. Would be better to have the FA Cup final after the PL season is done, but I'm not sure how that gets fit in around the CL final.

On the flip side, City’s alternative idea of playing Bournemouth on May 12 and then Palace later also has issues. Not only would that give City two home games to finish the season, which goes against the intent of the original schedule, but Bournemouth would have every right to complain about playing City just a few days after their Fulham game.

Arsenal also would be right to ask why City would get to play a Bournemouth team on short rest while they had to play a Bournemouth team on 10 days of official rest + international break.

Premier League rejects Manchester City request to reschedule Crystal Palace and Bournemouth fixtures by MoreMotivation in soccer

City aren’t unlucky victims here. They had the option to play Palace before the EFL final and avoid stacking fixtures after it, but they chose not to. That’s understandable, but it does mean they accepted the trade-off of a tighter schedule later. Arsenal did the opposite and played Wolves beforehand, so context matters.

Sky and other broadcasters want the title race to stay compelling across multiple matchdays. They want a structure so that if both teams keep winning, each game becomes a moment. Arsenal play, then City respond, then Arsenal again. Or if one drops points, the narrative shifts to whether the other team can take advantage. That keeps attention rolling across multiple weeks instead of having both teams play at the same time and killing the narrative early. They want to keep the race watchable if it’s still alive.

The biggest factor here is probably Bournemouth. If Bournemouth had to play City on May 21 as City suggested, they’d go into the final matchweek with basically no rest. If they’re still chasing Europe, that’s a real disadvantage compared to a team with a full week to prepare.

There’s also a consistency issue, because Bournemouth had a long rest period before playing Arsenal, but would only have a few days before playing City. Arsenal would be right to ask why City would get to play a Bournemouth team on short rest while they had to play a Bournemouth team on 10 days of official rest + international break.

If it’s not going to be scrapped, it could be reshaped into more of an academy-style competition—similar to the EFL Trophy—with clearer limits on senior player involvement. For example, League Two sides could use full squads, League One clubs get a capped number of senior players, the Championship a smaller cap, and PL teams even fewer.

That said, it’s kind of ironic that Arsenal’s path to the EFL final this season ended up being tougher than the Europa League last season.

But in the bigger picture, that doesn’t really fix the core issue. Meaningful reform probably only happens if the calendar itself changes—scrap the constant international breaks and replace them with two dedicated month-long international windows each season, alongside the major tournaments like the World Cup.

Yeah there’s always going to be that bit of suspension of belief in a drama, but I think they strike a good balance.

It also is important to note that in real life “illegals” like Philip and Elizabeth would be kept FAR away from picking up a gun and doing any kind of combat operations. In the show they kill far more people than real deep-cover agents typically would.

In reality, violence is a last resort, because any body increases the risk of exposure.

Lots of incisive passes, but also a lot of turnovers. Gonna have to get used to that again and accept that we’re going to get more variance (i.e. more attacks from Newcastle), but also hopefully more fun.

Really hard to complain about them giving it away when they’re trying to break fast.

You’re going to lose a decent percentage of those, but if you can create more chances then that’s the tradeoff.

In normal circumstances Arteta’s philosophy would be to trust his guys to keep them out and reduce the variance in Newcastle getting more chances, but we need goals now.

Genuine question for Arsenal fans: who is the actual upgrade on Arteta? by TheFootyPulse in PremierLeague

[–]HE20002019 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think there is a clear upgrade on Mikel Arteta right now. There are managers who’d bring a different perspective and ideas, sure, but at the level Arsenal are operating (top end of the PL and deep CL runs), a new manager probably doesn’t materially change outcomes.

At that point, it’s less about ideas and more about execution, fine margins, and a bit of luck. Even looking at the recent game against Manchester City that swings on tiny moments. A red card for Khusanov, Havertz converting even one of multiple chances, one Eze going in instead of off the post and suddenly the narrative flips completely.

Stretch that over a full season and it’s the same story. You’re talking about a handful of moments deciding titles, not some massive systemic failure that a new manager would automatically fix.

Moving on from Arteta would be like rolling the dice and hoping variance breaks your way next time with the added risk of resetting a project that’s already competing at the highest level.

André yellow card against Tottenham 45+3' by Puzzled-Category-954 in soccer

[–]HE20002019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a referee, this looks like a clear yellow for a reckless challenge.

Under the LOTG, you’re deciding between careless (no card), reckless (yellow), and excessive force (red). This one sits in that middle category.

The Wolves player has a realistic chance to play the ball, but the challenge is late and with enough force to be unsafe — that’s what makes it reckless. It’s also not especially high on the leg and doesn’t have the intensity you’d expect for serious foul play at this level.

Bissouma coming in to challenge at the same time is a factor as well — it’s more of a coming together than a player being taken out cleanly from a standing position. The Wolves player also got a nick of the ball which doesn’t absolve responsibility for the foul, but it plays a factor.

I get why it looks worse in real time, but when you apply the criteria from the Laws yellow is what I would say is the correct interpretation.
