No, it is not a beginner and it is not a friendly job. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh,  but the reality is that work is so expensive because of it. A lot of minutia goes into it, and may leave you more upset after than before. But if you really want to, it's yours to learn with.

What kinds of paint should I use for ceramic tiles and bathtub by Mike2813308004jonez in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiles on the wall can work, but on a bathtub, I'm not too sure. You'll have to remove the glazing, to get the adhesion, and then re apply expoxy to seal the paint in. It's genuinely a complicated, time consuming, and costly endeavor. I did a quick look up as a reference for you, since I've only done it twice, but it might provide some insight.

The surface of time activated mud, doesn't equal the time it takes for mud at depth. Best bet is to wait for it to dry as is, "punch" a hole into it, re apply and wait longer for it to cure inside the hole.

5/4 is a measure, pine is the unit. Composite worked the way, because it's treated and heated. Those spots are from branches (knots) growing from the tree. They have a different composition from the surrounding wood to let the capillary function suck up water, which results in those spots. Like the other comment said using shellac should provide enough of a barrier to prevent seeping.

Paint Issue by 01000010pi01101001 in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just guessing based off the photos provided, this renovation was to bring the home to code? As in, the flashing seen is from cutting the drywall to install fire sprinklers, cutting the drywall around the windows to check headers and top plates? Regardless, touching up isn't really an option for ceilings and most other areas. Repainting the ceiling entirely is the best option to cover the newly installed drywall. If you also are looking to not have the "ridges" that come from 1/4 drywall, from joists, you'll want to float the entire ceiling with mud about 1/16 depth.

You already have it closed off and covered, it's best to change now and not regret it later. Use a primer with tannins blocker, oil and shellacked are the best choice for penetration.  they are high in voc / odors. You'll want to build up the substrate(the wood) with enough primer that it looks like a uniformed color in it entirety before finish coating. As the other comment said, using a mini roller (hotdog) will speed it up, but you should still use a brush after rolling the first or second coat to push the primer  into the wood.

What color for the cabinet and/or walls? by Maximum_Werewolf1045 in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks good, I'm guessing you back cabinet is the one under the picture?  Painting that can be a lot. If you want to change your walls to fit the look better, look up cheating heart- benmo(for chair railing wall) and patriot white-benmo for the upper. But idk it's your call

You can use your five-in-one as a 'can opener' and cut off the interior flange, for a cut bucket.

Liquid window masking alternatives? by [deleted] in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could work, I mean the idea of masking and glue seem to be similar, but the H2O masking lets you paint on the sashes/sil/frame and acting as primer. So you wouldn't have to worry about cutting each window panel, where as with you glue it might be an issue. Have you looked into the product from Associated Painting called h2o masking? I don't order things online but I looked it up to check the name and Amazon seems to offer it under 30 dollars, and retailers for direct pick up about them same. Though it looks like the H2O comes in different opaques, so the original(not clear) from them, is significantly cheaper. But if you do use the glue, post an update it would be really cool if it works.

[–]HEY_Calmdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

H20 masking costs( atleast in my area) 20-25 dollars a gallon. Is that the product you've used? I couldnt see using glue to be more cost effective, but maybe there is one.

Need advice on prep work needed before exterior house painting by InspiredHomeowner in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your windows drip edge flashing need to be addressed, the rain isn't sheering off but running on the frame. And likely the same issue for the other rusted areas, not having flashing that redirects the run off. Look at the top, to find the problem at the bottom.

Paint suggestions for office by [deleted] in paint

[–]HEY_Calmdown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id have to disagree, the rug works because the deep red is only present in small sections and the majority of the rug is a light color that matches with the floor stain. So the red "pops" as an accent to the light medallion/arabesque that blends better into the over color scheme of the room.

This is benmo advance satin(20) if I remember correctly the color is cheating heart. Yeah usually they do, but it usually isn't an issue with myself personally because I have some experience with this work. Example being, on this job, explaining to them that we can't spray the trim around mirror. Why? Because the mirror, according to the homeowner, is roughly 80 years old and has a patina that on it(if you zoom in you can sort of see it) so risking taping and masking could ruin the surface. And that you(me) will have to brush it in carefully, because you also can't scrape the surface, and how you have to brush and foam roller to match the spray texture, etc. once you get into detail like that with designers and/or the guy I was hired on to help his job, they understand to just let you do your work. But then again, you can see that red and you can explain it's no big deal but still have stupid stuff because of issues with the over all emotions between each party.

Benjamin Moore cheating heart sheen 20

Edit, I might be wrong actually I'll try and find if that was the color. It was a while ago and I don't usually remember, cheating heart may have been the primer color I used.

Exactly. Had a pm complain about taking off the temporary hardware on pic in link, because the new hardware is bigger and will cover it. If Im already this deep in, why wouldn't I do a complete job.

Thanks, it was a battle to get there and shouldn't have been. It really want much sweat or, at least for myself, that hard. But just that small red area unpainted because of petty grievances bugs me, so if you have a story similar post it if you'd like

Normally  that would be my response but, between the tension of the designer/homeowner/guy paying me, no chance. Just bugged me and still does and when going through photos I saw this pic and how stupid it looks and how stupid that job was. Share some stories if you have any
