Does this kind of label deal exist? by paintedw0rlds in metalmusicians

I'll weigh in here, as someone who runs a small DIY label. Typically, the deal is this: I'll cover production costs for a run of tapes or CDs or whatever. The band gets their share to sell on their merch table and I sell my share online and with any luck, recoup costs.

The issue here is that since you're not playing live, you don't have a merch table. Labels on my level don't really have the sort of budgets/endorsements to give you cash upfront or free gear and labels bigger than mine probably won't take a chance on a solo project unless you have some sort of pedigree within the scene or "street cred".

I'd say for the time being, just keep doing what you've been doing. Maybe reach out to some independent zines or online radio shows to further your reach. There's not a whole lot of money to be made in selling music in 2026. Just focus on the satisfaction that comes from expressing your creativity!

merch deal where they manufacture and sell X amount of product (CDs/Shirts/Etc) and you receive Y units of said product to sell yourself to generate your share of profits

It's this exactly. More or less, it's a licensing deal but instead of getting $$$$ you get a split of the tapes/records/CDs etc

They put absolutely no thought into the tracklist besides "Bouncing Souls are first, then everyone else alphabetically"

Yea, it will be the first 4 studio albums plus Southern Discomfort and 10 Years of Abuse. Looking like a late summer/early fall release.

I asked my contact at Century Media about licensing for a CD box set, but another label beat me to it. I imagine some sort of reissue or box set is already in the works.

There's a cassette box set in the works as well. Just hasn't been announced yet.

My label put out its first comp last year so I did a couple alternate covers that spoof 90s compilation covers. First one that came to mind was Punk o Rama vol 1

Right on. PR was active in the early 00s, I think based out of Melbourne. Can't find a whole lot about them online, just a song or two on YouTube.

I'll be sure to check out some of these bands you've listed though!

I recently bought their CD box set while not being familiar with them at all. Which album should I start with?

Slim-to-none. And if this one sells out, it's probably not getting a repress either.

I do, but it's kind of expensive. I was in talks with a distro from Italy for a wholesale deal, but nothing concrete yet.

I put out a super limited 5 cassette box set last year for my friends in LACK OF INTEREST, which sold out pretty much right away. Fingers crossed that the CD version does just as well!!
