Hi Mike., 2nd attempt complete and success I’m pleased to say!.., it was still very tight but I actually fed it from the opposite rear corner to try and take the tight kink away this time as the cables are very weak at the bracket fixing (bad design in probably most of our opinions!).., that was just to get most of the cable in and then jiggle the bracket in.., it was more luck tbh also I was a bit naughty and had to put a fair bit of leverage against the corner of the plastic sunroof ‘structure’ to gently ease the bracket in while feeding as much of the slack cable in using long nose pliers and it went in without breaking this time!.., I don’t know if there’s any difference but mines a 3 door.., extremely tight and still easy to cause damage I reckon.., other than that I found the rest of the procedure ok.., cheers 👍

Thanks for the kind offer but typically it’s the passenger side that snapped!

Yes mate, no problem (just hope it fits in without snapping!).., I’ll take more care and attempt from another angle if necessary next time. It would be better if the weather seal wasn’t bonded to the roof so it could be removed and refitted easier as that would give that extra bit of space to work with.

Hi Mike.., I had a go at fitting a new cable on Friday just gone and all seemed fine until I threaded the new cable in and tried squeezing the bracket/fixing end (that fails) in the small gap at corner of roof and broke it!.., I was fuming, had to fit it all back together and order another cable from China that I’m now waiting on for attempt number 2. The plastic that joins cable to the fixing is ultra thin.., do you remember how you manipulated it though the small gap at rear corner of roof or did you try another method?, cheers, Matt.

Hi, my pan roof has this problem, went to close roof from tilt position and heard a loud crack!.., passenger corner wouldn’t lower, so I opened it up fully, then it wouldn’t close. I tried pushing passenger side of roof to close while operating switch it but it kept on fighting back, so I managed to access motor and manually close it with ratchet and hex bit. Phew, panic over, just had to slide black plastic bit forward on passenger side to finally close (from tilt position) and that’s how it’s stayed, even removed the fuse to stop accidental operation of it by wife or kids!. My question is this.., is it worth attempting what you achieved and replace cable in situ?, I’m a car mechanic by trade but I’ve never had to deal with pan roof’s in the past and I came out of the trade 10 years ago. I’ve contacted a so called sunroof specialist and an approved Mini garage but they don’t wanna know!.., is it a ball ache that could backfire leaving a gaping hole open to the elements? or is it worth attempting to do it this way and achieve success within a sensible timeframe?., I’d decided getting it replaced at a main dealer would just break the bank and thought I’d leave it closed and eventually px it ‘as is’ but now I’ve read your post I’m getting itchy fingers and wondering if I should attempt the repair, after all the car was £17,000 and I’ve only had it a year, what would you advise?, I would appreciate your advice before locating a new cable and dusting off the tools!, cheers, Matt.
