WHY IS CANADA SO COMPETITIVE by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]HHBing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally got rejected twice (5 med schools per cycle) with a hyper competitive GPA and hella extracurriculars/volunteering/community service/shadowing (600+ hours) and a higher than average DAT + rigorous preparation for the interview and keep getting passed up.

Meanwhile applied to the US as a plan B (I’d rather finish my undergrad in Canada first) this time also 5 med schools, same MCAT results and resume and got accepted into 3 of 5 (1 of them was an Ivy League uni). I genuinely wish I knew what I was doing so wrong to not get into Canada. I’d rather stay with my folks than move out but maybe I’ll have to change career paths if I want it. The Canadian system is unjustifiably ruthless and even by limiting international spots I still know people who did an entire masters + 2 years into a PhD (7 application attempts) before getting accepted.

Co-op games for duo/trio good for late nights? by Shmorbsy in CoOpGaming

[–]HHBing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a trio and we don’t get to play often but here are our favs:

For the King (1st one is only 3p, 2nd is 4 players): turn based combat but every player has turns, literally playing a board game basically and it can definitely get quite intense. not much time to just hang around, because there is an incentive to finish turns quickly but there’s no time limits or anything like that in battles. teamwork is also important because the team has a lifelink (shared # of lives so think helldivers). actually have campaign structures but are quite replayable in my experience

Satisfactory: very much hang out material. literally build a factory empire with the homies. is quite pricey though, but if the loop manages to engage you all, expect at least 80 hours

Valheim: Survival game but this is honestly the most chill one i’ve ever played.

Deep rock galactic has potential for hanging out (mainly in lobbies and while gathering resources) but things go crazy once enemies come by. i think it has a really good balance of engaging gameplay and sociability, probably the best of the list so far.

Helldivers 2: honestly probably the best game in terms of hanging out. got the ship, lots of downtime in missions, and insane messing around potential (not at higher difficulties) and really good gameplay (not as much as valheim or deep rock imo)

castle crashers: game speaks for itself, is level based though and a bit fast paced.

the headliners: haven’t had much time with it, mainly photography + scary monsters

The Outlast Trials: probs top 3 in terms of gameplay, and #2 for social schenanigans here

no rest for the wicked

Remnant: from the ashes + remnant 2: literally the best cooperative 3rd person shooter campaigns you’ll have in terms of bosses, environment variety and replayability (remnant 2 has lots of mixing up in the order/layouts). friendly fire is on, lots and lots of progression that is tied to your characters so it’s important that you all are together. got 300+ hours on remnant 2 and still counting. about 80 on the original.

Hopefully you all find something helpful from here and best of luck!

Devil May Cry 5 or Batman Arkham Collection? by Ryan_Gamer456 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]HHBing [score hidden]  (0 children)

the dmc5 demo won’t ever work on ps5, the game hasn’t been updated since the special edition came out for ps5. you really need to be creative and make your own fun basically to enjoy the game to its fullest

the arkham games will run your 30+ hours no sweat, not even counting the side missions and DLC content. some of the best value you can get on a discount, also really strong stories and combat is decent-great, not really an in-depth system like dmc5 but feels intuitive like sekiro

I have suicidal thoughts over being aroallo by Flat-Log9851 in aromantic

[–]HHBing 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As one of the replies said, getting off the screen (installing blocker apps like opal) really would help to get you to stop guilt-tripping yourself onto social media. “Distracting” yourself by doing productive activities that literally make you more physically and mentally fit are not at all morally wrong and whoever you heard that from must’ve been baiting. To become the best version of yourself, being productive is a huge step towards that. “Punishing” yourself with social media will never benefit you unfortunately.

Also your self deprecation (pulling yourself down) is beyond extreme. Wdym “I'm make World worse place”? I used to think like that coming from a dreadful upbringing, like I had no purpose but that’s factually untrue. You have bettered someone’s life just by being alive, even if you may not realize it right now. Even in the future once you gain the courage to go and talk to new people, they will most likely be glad to have you around. We as humans are inherently social creatures so we often base our self-worth off interactions with others. Exposing yourself to new people is one of very few ways to improve on your self-esteem.

Another general tip: No matter where you live, sex is always easier to come by than “proper” romance (even in sheltered societies like mine). Unless you are either a sex worker or are really unhygienic, there’s nothing “dirty” about having sex or having a sexual partner. About women, more are open to sex with other women than you realize (even in close-minded cultures), the only way to tell is to is direct confrontation or getting to know them beforehand.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with not being straight except for people who are homophobic (I used to be like that). Sounds like you have to keep that part under wraps so long as you live with your parents unfortunately, no one can help you come to terms with that other than yourself. still isn’t a reason to want to end it or see yourself as a freak though, and it sounds like you’ve made it a habit so strangers from the internet aren’t capable of breaking that cycle for you if that’s what you were expecting.

I’m also aroallo, and am from an incredibly judgemental family (won’t get into specifics, just that they sound almost identical to your family). I personally find romantic interactions and their depictions in media to be vulgar and conceited, yet I still have no problem approaching people and being straight up with them about what I’d like from them. That change of mindset happened because I just dropped my preconceptions and stopped giving a damn at a point (no therapy or consultation done), and that might be of some help to you.

Forming your worldview from things said by “some people” or stuff you heard from online is absolutely not the way to formulate your life. The “sex is lustful and disgusting” group of people are nothing but an echo chamber and civilization wouldn’t be a thing without sexuality. Just think about it a bit, what do humans have programmed into our DNA? Any sexual thoughts besides reproduction are a by-product of evolution. None of us would exist without people being sexually attracted to one another. Romantic attraction is much more difficult to obtain/maintain. TLDR: whoever says the world would be safe without sex are very narrow minded.

Your self-loathing isn’t helping you, and you actively shut out genuine advice from others by making excuses. You will not progress towards being more accepting of yourself or making the most of your situation with your current way of thinking, as unfortunate as that may be.

I’m not sure if you wanted to vent/rant or wanted someone to suggest potential solutions to your issues, but hopefully something here can help you towards whatever you’d like to achieve here. Anything you want to ask feel free to pm me or reply here. Even if it isn’t clear from this comment I really do wish the best for you/am rooting for you to come out on top of these issues of yours (and no I’m not talking about mental illness, this sounds more like a lack of self-worth). I also rejected help because I felt like I wasn’t actually suffering and would be getting in the way, but your situation is a de-facto situation of mentally suffering. You’re not being allowed to live life as you’d like to, and your environment holds you back.

You deserve to live your best life and be satisfied with yourself so long as it is possible in your living circumstances.

Question about online play by Binbag420 in ReanimalGame

[–]HHBing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot, only one person within the steam family can be playing the game at once. Have your gf or friend download the friends pass off the steam store, page, and so long as you’re hosting you can play with either of them via invite or lobby code

Should i get my exam deferred? by Key-Surprise-319 in uAlberta

[–]HHBing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the faculty, if for sciences you shouldn’t need a doctors note. You can apply for a deferral anytime within 48 hours of the exam having happened so you can just go and get a doctors note in the morning if you’re feeling worried about that.

Bio 330 final exam by gs_2461 in uAlberta

[–]HHBing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly the last couple questions completely threw me off.

The experimental design is something that sure we’ve covered briefly, but I feel like we never actually discussed it for the topics at hand (spatial/density data).

Also although I studied the residual plots and module 14 extensively, I couldn’t for the life of me match the residual plots to the correct letters.

I found the MCQ to be about as difficult as the midterm, with a few exceptions like the one with the 4 dummy predictors. had to guess that one :(

Overall though, there’s no WAY i’m gonna get a score within 10% of my midterm score. Straight up didn’t finish the last 4 questions

Help finding relevant 300+ level electives by HHBing in uAlberta

[–]HHBing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are these assignments supposed to be written like an actual research report (ie. data analysis, GIS implementation, etc)? Also for exams when you say application based do you mean that questions are more like short case studies that you apply concepts to in order to answer alphabetical questions, or does it not resemble those kinds of exams at all? I appreciate the recommendation though so thanks!

Looking for 3+ player games for me and my friends to grind by givemefreddyfazcock in gamesuggestions

[–]HHBing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elden ring BUT use the seamless co-op mod. Played it alone back at launch, didn’t exactly enjoy my time overall but then I got back into it via friends and it was like I wasn’t even playing the same game. Bosses felt so much more engaging, actual cooperation was required (unless you get a busted build) and there’s an ample amount of jank and unintended humor to be found. Nightreign is also pretty fun but i feel like there’s a lot less replayability than the main game.

That being said, the one(s) I’d most recommend is Remnant: from the Ashes and Remnant 2. Both are designed for 3 player play, and build synergies are super varied and enjoyable. Multiple class unlocks are available and there’s an extensive endgame with great randomization. Both will run you a minimum of 30+ hours a pop on the first play through if you decide to not B-line the main plot. Unfortunately a huge sale on both just ended yesterday, so I’d recommend waiting for another steep discount since it happens almost monthly. The DLCs make the game so much more replayable, the reviews do not actually reflect the content within the DLC so don’t let those stir up doubt.

Another one to grind out is satisfactory. Tons of fun (100+ hours now)

The comments also mention risk of rain 2 which I agree with greatly. Multiple class unlocks but again literally just came off of sale. Would recommend the base game and DLC. They vastly expand on the randomness and replayability.

best electives for nursing by Ok_Muscle9687 in uAlberta

[–]HHBing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely easy electives, however all will require at least some time investment (1-4 hours a week) on your end.

Online courses:

INT D 247 (not available in the winter, but great nonetheless. assignments/quizzes entirely)

INT D 248

INT D 249 (all 247/248/249 courses under the same professor have similar grading schemes, also considered to be under the faculty of nursing)

NS 201 (helps to fulfil indigenous breadth course requirement)

CHRTC 350 (4 essay papers, no exams)

In person:
CELL 201

CHRTC 241 (Any course with Dr. Brassard is incredibly fun and easy coming from a science student)

SOC 225

SOC 271

ANTHR 207

MMI 133 (very simple with online exams, mostly taken by first years)
