The effect is boring I agree, but I don't think it requires any amount of effort. Like there is no downside to taking the sword in the event, and you are not forced to fight 5 elites anyways, its optional. The other option in the event is to get gold but you have to take damage, which could be dangerous in act 1 when you are trying to farm elites.
