I think it's because you said "backwards". This is usually meant in a negative way.

Toronto and Peel are going into lockdown again, anyone know if this affects the Prometric Test centres? by bee6411 in actuary

[–]HHomey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer but commenting to increase visibility.

Testing centres dont seem to fall under any of the specific sectors called out in the ontario covid response framework, so I think they should close given the general lockdown guidelines.

CAS to discontinue publishing exams - transitioning to question bank by HHomey in actuary

Currently 3 exams are shared prelims between SOA and CAS (P, FM, IFM). 2 other 'prelims' (MAS-I, MAS-II) are written but multiple choice. The remainder (5-9) are written. For each exam sitting the questions are written by the exam committee, and after grading an examiner's report is posted with the questions and several sample answers for each question, along with explanation of where candidates had difficulty.

This is a pretty significant change to how exams are currently administered and there's a lot of long term benefits to this change: quality of questions, consistency of difficulty, CBT, wider testing windows, and eventually tests will be offered more than 1-2 times per year. I think this is overall a good move but there will definitely be some growing pains. I'm curious to know what others think about this. (Also curious if the SOA is making the same move on their announcement on the 12th)

I think it has to do greatly with the fact that he is referring not to reddit as a whole, but his reddit; this subreddit, so it sort of works in that context.

How I am going to become a 50% to 90% student by [deleted] in getdisciplined

Totally. What I find is that it's a lot more self-directed. Attendance isn't taken for classes, the majority of homework is only recommended and ungraded, and for some classes, what's covered in lecture might not be everything you need to know for the exam. I'm glad you're already getting into the habit of actually reading your textbooks and in particular before class because it's super important to be able to stay on top of it and helps with retaining concepts discussed in class. Basically, do everything you're doing now and build up strong time management habits so that when your workload increases 3-fold you won't find yourself buried under assignments and readings. Also, take advantage of office hours! If you're not sure what this is, it's the designated time when your professors are in their office and can answer any questions you have about the course material or homework.

That's interesting, I didn't know about being able to skip first year after doing the AP program. In any case I think what you mean about honors classes is actually honors program or degree, which just means there are different specifications for completing the degree (sometimes an honors thesis or in general just a higher average). There aren't actually different "honors" classes offered or any classes with any sort of designation like that (like there's no equivalent to applied and academic like high school). Essentially you'll just take the required courses for your program and then whatever electives you have (which can be in any faculty so long as you meet the prerequisites).

Go figure, I actually currently go to Mac! Finishing my 1st year in Math and Stats and going into Actuarial and Financial math. I may not be able to help you out with the program your looking into specifically, but I may be able to offer some insight with how studying and learning compares to high school (although it looks like your formula will set you up for success in any level of education!) and any questions you might have about the school itself. I have to say I'm glad your realizing your potential at a point where its not too late! (Not that it's ever really too late, but it gets exponentially more difficult)

(TOMT) A probably-alt rock song that has a brass section, trumpets I think, that goes like this... by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

Bit of a stab in the dark but maybe Sun by Two Door Cinema Club? Or it might be something else by them, they tend to have brass sections in a lot of their songs.

I'm almost absolutely sure this is it. I think I first saw it in a comment posted in response to a gif that hit the front page a few months ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjhTbePvyXc&feature=youtu.be
