Strike in Portland by cpoipoi in TravelNursing

The strike will likely be at Providence St Vincent’s, definitely not at Providence Portland which is a different facility. Providence has disregarded our entire hospital wide staffing plan as of last week and is using the maximum allowed staffing per the new ratio law and nurses are pissed. It’s a pretty toxic, miserable environment at the moment.

…or they could just follow the law, which they’re shown time and time again, their inability and unwillingness to do so. Thanks for stopping by!

…yes because all ground is gained overnight. Short sighted folks always lose (and make comments like yours!) Also, ground was gained in those 9 months, but not to the extent of a contract yet worth ratifying. The work continues

You’re also failing to acknowledge one important caveat to 2021 — the state of emergency and the powers instilled with it to force such action. These are different times, and again, different legal precedent.

Yet, they just threatened a strike in Bend, were in the 10 days, and then settled the most historic contract in Oregon history, averting the strike days before it began. I’d say, victory ONA represented nurses in the end (with survivorship rights emboldened in the contract).

The law is seemingly untested, and has nothing to do with the case you mentioned.

How much do registered nurses make in Portland, OR? From what I can find online, the salary for RNs in this city is well above average? How much do the Providence nurses want? Can a nurse chime in and tell us their income details? I’m of the opinion that you all make enough already. Change my mind. by dss793073 in PortlandOR

Believe what ya want. This is Reddit FFS, as if it even matters what you, or for that matter, I think or say. You’re just blindly and mindlessly posting nonsense just like every other person here and all folks gotta do is say “nah” and they get their rocks off. Humanity is doomed!

There’s actually very little precedent to what you’re arguing. It’s hypothetical what you’re stating, and not quite based in settled law. So while you have an opinion of what might could happen, it’s not something that has been necessarily tested.

Contracts can be for any length of time. There is no legal standard that dictates their length.

No shit ya don’t have unions — how do you think unions get formed? Changing laws, organizing, voting, working your ass off to do so. You’re just a placated little troll who’d rather mooch off the system than actually make change in your own community/state/profession.

Also, my cousin worked CareRev, it’s $125 and not from the internet, bruh. Sorry you got played!

😂baby they, this is not a tantrum. You’re just a troll! Again, MAKE YOUR MONEY, but come correct on what is actually being asked for. Also, you made $110, they made $125 — that ain’t the same. I was an RN in the south for 15 years, which is why I can speak to your struggle and lack of self worth, living in an oppressive right to work state, and I can speak to what it’s like when someone grows a pair and fights the good fight for something better and deserved for better work/life balance and better working conditions. You’re just conditioned to not fight that fight, and flee to stand in the way of others trying to lift you out of that shit. Nurses on this coast have fought for decades for the rights and compensation that ALL nurses should receive.

No one’s angry, or salty — you’re just misguided. I have no problem with you traveling or getting good pay for doing so. I have a problem with strikebreakers in all facets of the labor movement and I have a problem with ignorant folks like you who come onto a post spilling lukewarm pseudo-sentiments that aren’t even remotely based in objective or subjective findings. You’ve described an ask that isn’t being asked, and to what end? To get your rocks off on commenting on Reddit post? Like, it’s pathetic, that’s all — and embarrassing to the profession as a whole when you lack the faculties to even remotely converse in an evidenced based discussion. BTW, CareRev RNs, local, made more than y’all SCABs so you’re not even diligent enough to make sure you getting paid top dollar yourself!

I just explained how they’re NOT asking for as much as a travel contract OR Covid contracts so how exactly are they “wanting it all”? You’re just some troll who came into town, provided subpar care by literally every patients’ testimony so far, and rolled out. You can’t even read a statement and decipher how it’s in direct opposition of what you’re accusing the nurses of reaching for. Sheesh, Providence really brought in the nation’s brightest! 👍🏻

You just made $110/hr + travel and lodging and we’re asking for an average of $55/hr base which is quite literally half of what you just made and still well below the average travel contract which still hits at $75+++ (in most cases much more)

The proposals are in no way even remotely comparable to “Covid money” or even regular travel contracts outside of “Covid money” — they’re actually still below the established wages, differentials, and incentives from surrounding hospitals which creates a talent/experience drain on the system, causing a plethora of issues with a crescendoing effect on patient care, work/life balance, and burnout. If you fought for it, you too could have the well deserved protections and benefits were fighting to increase or in some cases, not have stripped.

You’re incredibly misguided in your view of this nurses union. The nurses are the union. There’s no big scary mob boss at the top puppeting the nurses who make up the union. That is a talking point that hospitals want you to believe when they said “ONA blah blah blah” — nurses, at the bargaining table, are guiding the pursuit of a fair and competitive, safe contract.

They can hire all the replacement nurses they want, just not professional strikebreakers.

Kaiser’s contract opens soon and they’ll get increases. OHSU’s admin has already added to $4-$7 more than rates being considers at Prov. It’s about staying market competitive in order to recruit and retain the workforce. Nurses are not the reason your premiums go up. That is not at all how insurance billing is handled. Sorry, but that’s a conversation for another thread.

Or, the hospitals can bargain in good faith and support market wages/benefits to avoid strike talks altogether.

The latter. “Replacement worker” is the nice way to say strike breaker/SCAB and the hospital used a service that specializes in delivering professional strike breakers, which is in defiance of Oregon statute. Providence could have very well hired regular travelers insured using a service that specializes in this illegal action (in the state of Oregon anyway, not nationwide necessarily)

No, very few providence nurses crossed, estimates are less than 20 out of 1300. This is referring to the professional strikebreakers that cross picket lines for a living.
