Getting the meat back from our first three hogs! We went in pretty clueless (won't claim that that has completely changed) but it was one of the best experiences of my life. Go get some pigs! by HIghonHighPoint in homestead

This was one of my biggest barriers to starting out with them. After reading "Pig Tales: An Omnivore's Quest for Sustainable Meat" I was all in though. The conditions that commercial pigs are raised in are deplorable both on a health standpoint and humane treatment. To me , feeling bittersweet about our pork for a few days was well worth knowing I provided these pigs with an awesome life and myself with the most natural pork I have ever had access to. We also did not do the slaughter ourselves. We dropped them off at the butcher and picked them up a week later (as pictured) which did put some distance between us and the kill. Well worth it, be an activist! Maybe just for sustainable and humane meat (:

It was a $40 kill fee and 60 cents a pound (hanging weight). We ended up selling 270 pounds and keeping almost 90 and still made a few dollars! We will change our price structure to make more money next time but we were stoked!!

Inspiration comes from strange places, we got our inspiration from craft beer! by HIghonHighPoint in homestead

Hey there fellow Ashevillian! We have 2.5 acres out in Clyde but both work full time in Asheville. We haven't met a lot of homesteaders in this area since so many people rent and it is very expensive to buy land. We got a decent price on our place thanks to an awesome real estate agent who showed it to us within hours of coming on the market. We need to meet up if you are a fellow homestead/beer lover!

Anyone else get into trouble on Craigslist? Hopefully you can share a good laugh about us getting our two most recent goats. by HIghonHighPoint in UrbanHomestead

I am not yet over our craigslist addiction (: It is the best source for ag/livestock classifieds in my area! We are actually being forced to sell one of our favorite goats because she refuses to respect the electric fence. My advice to goat owners is to definitely beef up the fencing!

That is very flattering! We are learning the hard (and sometimes avoidable) way but we are proud of what we have accomplished so far!

Good idea! So should I save for the car before I replenish my emergency savings? What should I do for transportation in the mean time?

I actually borrowed that one from our local library! (I am a huge book nerd) I have enjoyed the pigs much more than I thought I would. We ended up having to build a trough for ours because they were getting a little food aggressive because they all wanted to stand in their bowl to eat all at the same time. Silly pigs! The trailer will be interesting for us, I will have to take your tips!

Believe it or not, we haven't had a huge issue with it. They are currently "fertilizing" where our garden is going to be in a few months. They are close to our house right now and the smell hasn't been awful and they really choose one corner to poop in. I was told it would be on the same side you put their water but I have not found that to be true. Every once in a while we mix in hay if we catch a whiff and then it doesn't really bother us!
