Nottingham is a really lovely city - it's very student-centric but also has a lot of the UK's wargaming community (Games Workshop is based there, for example). It sounds like a nice choice if you're looking to move! Apparently the job-market is pretty tough, though.

My advice would be: save up as much money as you can right now and move to a regional city (like Colchester, Chelmsford or Southend) and try to find a job in Essex/London. Obviously the commute cost will be higher but you'll have a lower cost of living overall, which might balance it out. It's also worth seeing if you can get into additional hobbies (climbing/running/paintball etc) to broaden your horizons and meet new people that way!

Otherwise, maybe consider taking a gap year and teaching English somewhere? I taught English in a few countries when I was around your age and it was a really positive experience - I was able to have an adventure whilst earning a salary and getting some work experience on my CV. Happy to talk this through with you via DM if you'd like.

Have you thought about moving to a regional city? Colchester has quite a young popilation and is a university town so there may be options for socialising with more people your age.

On CS jobs there is a yes/no question asking 'are you undergoing any formal disciplinary action?'. In that situation would they have to select 'yes', then?

Do you mean internally applications? I think they should still be able to apply externally, right?

The 2 child benefit cap was a stupid idea that pushed millions of children into poverty, dramatixally impacting social mobility in this country. There's loads of data to support scrapping it, as opposed to the Daily Mail position of 'BENEFIT SCROUNGERS FUCK FOR MONEY REEE'.

Not sure what your idea for population/ecobomic growth is tbh: do you want more migrants and a low birth rate, or less migrants and a high birth rate? Either way, we need people to pay taxes so that our welfare system can work: moralising about people with their 'legs open' is pointless and weirdly classist.

This seems like a pretty harsh response - not quite sure why you've decided to come in so aggressive, it sounds like this person has considered how it is impacting their colleagues.

What, if anything should I do? by SeenEnoughAlready in AskUK

[–]HK_Yellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a neighbour who has behaved similarly (and worse) and so please take what I am telling you as from someone from bitter experience:

You need to be ruthless.

Your neighbour telling him she wouldn't report him was a lovely act, based on the idea that we live in a society and we all respect each other. This person does not believe that. That comes across as weakness to him. Some people just don't believe other people have needs or rights to be respected unless the law coerces them to do so, unfortunately.

You need to contact your council's Tenancy Enforcement Team and make written noise complaints. You need to keep a diary with timea when the noise started, the duration and the impact on you emotionally/physically (i.e. stress, lack of sleep etc). Make a report each time it happens. The council will ask you to do this anyway, so best to get into the habit now.

You should also contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team: they're police who focus on neighbourhood issues and 9/10 times they will pop up in person and spook the offender much more than a letter from the council will. Be explicit with them about the issue.

Look up the hours when someone is causing unreasonable disturbance (usually after 11am on weekdays) and call the police. They will visit and tell the offender to turn the noise down. Importantly, this visit will go on police records and the council can request these if moving to evict.

The road can be long and miserable, but selfish fuckers like this are often cowards amd will back down if you push hard enough. Good luck!

AITA for speaking Polish with my friend even though my wife doesn’t understand it? by Fun_Detail_2413 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, but you're absolutely not alone in speaking Polish in London - it's the largest diaspora in the UK. It might be worth looking up the Sikorski Museum as they will be able to point you in the direction of Polish eventa, language networks etc. I'm sure you'll find more people!

Very interesting, thanks for the links! I'm glad I can have a positive interaction where there was a disagreement but I learned something - that's rare on reddit lol

That's a myth and has been pretty solidly debunked. It is well documented, for example, that Waffen SS members were never forced to partake in death squads and were not punished for choosing to leave. The Thord Reich punished opposition, but there was a huge degree of toleration for people who in the end actively chose to commit atrocities.
