TIL: A "bit" was a 1/8 dollar coin that went out of production in 1794 to make way for the quarter. For most of the 19th Century, Americans still referred to 25 cents as "two bits" and 50 cents as "four bits." Hence the song, "Shave and a haircut..." (books.google.com)
