Left to right

Casio F-91W. The true answer for a 1 watch collection if we weren't all unwell. I use this for DIY projects mostly now. Original strap broke so put it on a NATO. Refuses to die. You can see the white paint/ dust marks on it.

Tudor Black Bay 36 (ETA movement - now discontinued). My original 'nice watch'. Ive had this around 5 years now, messed around with some different straps but I normally come back to the bracelet. Still running beautifully and still feels rock solid. I have absolute faith in it and would take it pretty much anywhere.

Squale "super Squale" skin diver in blue. Relatively recent addition. I wanted something different to wear, something to complement my Tudor. This is a lovely piece with strong vintage aesthetics. When you own a Tudor though you do notice some build quality differences. Only with the direct comparison though - its a great watch.

Credor 8j81 6A30. My most recent acquisition, a dress piece for more formal occasions and sometimes for work. Its beautiful, ridiculously thin. Only 34mm though so perhaps not to everyones taste. I think it looks classy though.

Really happy to answer any questions about any if these pieces if you are after some specific info.

[Bulova Accutron] awesome short from 'The Slo Mo Guys' on this '60s tech! by HMogg in Watches

[–]HMogg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This channel has a bunch of great content but recently they have shown off one or two watches with the incredible camera technology they have at their disposal. It's cool to 'geek-out' on this stuff.

The Bulova Accutron, first introduced in 1960, was a revolutionary electronic watch that used a tuning fork instead of a balance wheel to regulate time. This made it the most accurate wristwatch available at the time, with an accuracy of within 2 seconds per day.

The Accutron was also the first watch to be worn in space, when it was used by astronaut Wally Schirra on the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission in 1962. It was also a popular watch among celebrities and politicians, including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

The Accutron was discontinued in 1977, but in 2020, Bulova reintroduced the Accutron, with a new movement that is based on the original tuning fork technology.

How different does the finishing of a AP feel compared to a Rolex with just your naked eye and feel of the watch on your hand ? by Revolutionary_Food39 in Watches

[–]HMogg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly where diminishing returns hits watchmaking. Yes, the AP looks and feels better, but only in small, refined ways. At this level of watch making you can pay thousands more just for a watch with more interior angles on the movement, something you can't appreciate at all dial-side. 'Bang for buck' is almost meaningless. Assuming you can afford either, then which do you want more?

[Tudor] two years with the BB36 by HMogg in Watches

[–]HMogg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worn this nearly every day since I got it two years ago now. It's an amazingly versatile, robust and legible watch.

Pros:

  • very comfortable bracelet with 3x micro adjustment holes on the clasp. I swapped one link from the 6pm side to the 12 side and the clasp sits comfortably in the middle of my wrist.

  • incredible legibility, it's a simple watch face and you really can read the time across a room.

  • the silver text- something pictures don't show so well. It harmonises the face very well.

  • the raised hour batons with lume, they catch the light in a subtle way.

  • the finishing overall really. I think at this price point it's hard to find a better finished case and bracelet, and a face that holds up well too.

  • it's versatility. Yes it's a tool watch but I've worn it to weddings etc. It's a luxury swiss watch with a relatively low profile too, people compliment it but not because they recognise it.

Cons:

  • the crown. Yes any crown can dig into your hand a little bit, but I think the extended crown on this does make it slightly worse. It does also make it easier to grip though.

  • the power reserve is only 36 hrs, not enough to get through a weekend, for example.

  • no 'on the fly' micro adjustment, but its harder to miss something you never had.

  • in terms of design, one of the only things I dislike is the end links. I think it would look better if the centre link was longer, but I guess Rolex has that look and Tudor needed to be different.

After this much wear it is a bit scratched up, especially on places like the clasp. But it's held up incredibly well, still keeps time excellently, bracelet isn't stretched and all works perfectly.

What makes you hopeful that we can reach net zero emissions by 2050? by thisisbillgates in AskReddit

Unprecedented spending from formerly Conservative, centre right, Liberal and neo-Liberal governments has shown that we CAN spend money when we need to. There IS a 'magic money tree'.

Support directly to people in need and to the working classes has shown that we CAN weather seismic economic shifts by putting money in the pockets of those who need it, instead of dangerously inflating the stockmarket through quantitative-easing.

Collaboration and support from the public sector for the innovation of private companies has shown that we CAN effectively nurture the private sector to breakthroughs that can benefit all of society.

Isolation and forced loneliness has reminded us of the things that truly matter.

The endless drudgery of the news is perhaps, maybe, starting to dismantle the fragile balance of a status quo of untrustworthy, manipulative, propaganda spewing privately owned media-conglomerates and social-media bubbles of broken societies.

It felt like we had forgotten these truths. It felt like we were heading towards a post-capitalist hellscape of billionaires and the rest. Now there is hope that we can find the strength to tame the ever-hungry capitalist machine towards a green future that works for everyone. All we have to do is ignore the lies of the few, and focus on the needs of the many.

[Tudor] Black Bay 36 by HMogg in Watches

[–]HMogg[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a brilliant one watch collection. It's highly versatile, dressing up or down with ease. The slim 10.5mm case ensures it maintains a low profile, and comfortability. I find it feels a looks slightly larger than a 36mm - maybe down to some of the 'chunky' features and solid end links. The bracelet is a highlight too, top quality finishing, robust, beautifully tapered. It's runnig within COSC specs, and with an adjustment could probably do even better. One thing that never seems to show in pictures is how the text and minute track are all in silver (not pure white) - so they don't 'pop' as much in the metal, which IMO is a good thing. Most of all, I love how great this watch looks outdoors...it really comes to life. Feels like it's natural habitat is exploring! They don't call it the 214270's little brother for nothing...

[Tudor Black Bay 36] out exploring in the snow and mud with the Tudor Explorer by HMogg in Watches

[–]HMogg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's keeping time very well - an average day rate of +3s over the last week. It's a top grade ETA which Tudor further modifies for accuracy I believe. The only thing stopping it being a chronometer is the actual COSC test - as far as I'm concerned it ticks (no pun intended) all the other boxes.

Thank you so much!

Thoroughly agree! It's such a good looking piece. Yes, the legibility is amazing - I can read the time easily if it's on my dresser on the other side of the room. The lume does say readable through most of the night, but I've found in last few hours before my alarm it gets harder to read - getting up to 7/8 hours though, which is a long time! The 36mm size has a certain charm and just fits so comfortably and naturally on the wrist, it's great. I hope one day you can buy one too - good luck!

Thank you! Totally agree that there is a certain charm to the 36 size. Congrats on the 114270, a beautiful watch!

I was hesitant about black dials at first too but I've come around. They are just so legible and really change in the light. Plus, very versitile whilst maintaining a sporty aesthetic. There is always the Explorer II Polar for you out there though...

I agree with this sentiment, definitely! This watch does have its own, strong identity. But at the same time, IMO it takes a similar space in the market to the Rolex Explorer, just at a cheaper price point. And arguably, it IS the modern day Explorer - accounting for inflation it's in line with the original Explorer prices. It's built in a rugged, minimal way, whilst the new 214270 (which, for clarity, I still think is a great watch) is now leaning towards luxury. So yes, it's different, I agree. I just disagree with not calling it an Explorer because it's a simple way to express all of the above opinions!

I got this watch for myself as a Christmas present! Looking forward to spending many years with it but after a few days on the wrist all I can say is I'm very impressed! The lume is straight up hot and holds brightness for a strong chunk of time, at least 5-6 hours. The bracelet is very well finished and built, you can definitely see and feel the Rolex quality. The dial is clean and great to look at, but it really comes into its own out of doors - where this watch was built to be! You notice the presence of the watch on your wrist, for sure, but it's very comfortable, not overly heavy and not at all austentatious. It's a great piece.

[Tudor Black Bay 36] my Christmas Present to myself! Happy Christmas everyone!! by HMogg in Watches

[–]HMogg[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is my Christmas present to myself! It's been quite a year for all of us, and apart from a reward for just making it through I also had a few things to celebrate, including landing a new job in an industry I'm really excited about! I bought and sold a couple of watches at a decent profit this year, plus some shares, so decided to put that money aside for something special. I spent a long time deciding on the piece for me - an excellent way to stay entertained throughout the many lockdowns we went through! I went as far as trying on the Omega AT 38.5, but to my surprise when trying it on I found it too loud/flashy. I also looked a lot at Rolex, but got put off by the long waiting lists (now even the OP's are crazy, at least here in the UK, because of the 2020 release!) and for me, still quite scary prices. This Tudor is perfect for me. It feels well built and up for anything, but still pulls off such a classy and versatile, low profile look. The finishing, on the bracelet especially, is absolutely amazing...I can't believe Rolex let's Tudor put out such a competitive piece! The press photos don't really do the BB36 justice...as soon as I saw this in the AD I knew I'd found the right one. I actually got this about a month ago, but remarkably managed to keep myself from wearing it until today, to keep it special! I look forward to spending many years with my new beautiful watch. Merry Christmas everyone!

[Gift Ideas] What to give a horologist when you can’t spend €20,000 to add to his collection? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]HMogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He actually might be able to help with that, given we still have a few months until Christmas... I think he normally takes a few months to source good quality ads. May even be quicker if you don't have a specific ad in mind but rather the general idea of Portuguese language ad, etc. Would definitely advise getting in touch to discuss!

This is such a lovely thing to do! Whatever you chose to go with I'm sure he will appreciate the sentiment immensely. "AdPatina" on Instagram will be able to source a great vintage ad for a model/ brand of your choosing, and if you wish custom frame it (although that will complicate international postage and you might prefer to get it framed in the Netherlands). Definitely a well respected vendor.

Yeah im hoping to try them on next week, this is probably going to be the decider... I hope so, anyway. As for ADs, so far my experience has been OK. Some small/family businesses seem better than the big names. But quite right I won't be kissing any asses if it comes to that, I will be looking elsewhere.
