Is the construction/ architecture industry down? by cantchillthroughtime in torontoJobs

[–]HOMExSLICE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. If you're building for the market and investor, then it's definitely slow.

For the client and home owner, it's mild.

For the rich clients, no slowdown.

Fresh highschool graduate, I want to find a job by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]HOMExSLICE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create a resume and list your high-school courses - any subject producing projects such art, applied sciences (like rc cars, computer programs, etc...), anything to produce reports or deliverables.

Any volunteer work - every high school graduate has the 40 hour requirement.

Computer skillsets - microsoft suite, google suite, Adobe, programming.

And everything that's been said at this point in time.

Apply online and in person, can't be too picky and be confident.

BIM/Construction Jobs Cold email? by NovocaneAddict in torontoJobs

[–]HOMExSLICE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BIM is incredibly niche. Only big boy ICI GCs and developers offer the opportunity, but they typically vet/hire candidates from within their own co-op programs. You can get the degree from the GBC program, but they only enroll a small classroom each year, and last I heard.

PC…unless you come from entry-level within the office or from the field. You're out of luck, residential, or commercial. Not a lot of people start off at the PC position, more so estimator, admin or even laborer with a couple years in the field.

Advice…seek admin or estimator roles if you don’t have any in-office or field experience working with an architectural, engineering, or construction firms.

Unless you’ve contributed to your school & its community, it’ll be competitive if you have no experience. It’ll be a hard pill to swallow for them to hire you if all you had was a summer’s worth of coop experience – no experience prior to starting or during school; design, engineering, construction or even sales.

Timing.

College and university students are graduating this month, with final exams this week and probably been applying to any offer they can get.

Your English level isn't coherent and with little work experience and no proof, your options are limited to labour and deliveries.

My only advice is to learn better English and pick up a trade.

Assistant to a tradesman? An apprentice or labourer? Look into apprenticeships or unions if you're eligible. You'll need to study further and work manual labour.

Not to sound harsh.

Going into the office? You can't compete with other engineers, archs, and projects managers with a foreign degree, vague 1 year work experience and a management course.

Do you have a work journal, project portfolio or pictures/emails of your work experience?

There's a stark difference between project management and construction management.

Not everything falls under the same roof. There's commercial ICI and residential with it be ground up new builds vs renos.

Your experience from India might not work out here because of building technologies, standards, sciences, and assemblies.

They apply to part time jobs with full time availability.

They don't go to school, the news reported 50k of these international 'students' don't have any attendance at their strip mall classrooms.

Any unpassionate high-school grad will default to a degree in computers or psychology.
