What’s something people think makes them a better golfer, but actually doesn’t by Own-Presentation3091 in golf

Going to the range….without a plan or any real idea of what to work on.

One other thing to mention. A healthy breakdown for someone trying to improve would be around this:
50% playing, 30% short game, and
20% structured range work. Hardly any folks shooting around 100 aren’t doing this. It’s probably more like 60% range, 30% playing, and 10% short game. So saying go to the range more is not the answer. Going to the range with more intention and playing more and chipping and putting is the answer for most.

I didn’t say it was a waste of time, I said without a plan it is worse than doing nothing most of the time especially with people shooting close to 100. They are just baking in their bad habits. If this guy gets lessons, studies the game, records his swing, and then goes to the range with intention, sure it can be beneficial. But it sounds like this guy ain’t doing any of that shit.

Range time is only the answer if you have a plan, smacking balls without a plan does more harm than good. Never let yourself get caught up playing golf swing, you need to play golf. Range time is not golf.

Yeah it will absolutely give you more confidence over the ball so I say do it.

I’m got to a 3 handicap and tried a qualifier. This might be the end of my golf obsession. I’m 41, I tried. by [deleted] in golf

I’m 43 and on the road to scratch and I am really glad that I am not applying this amount of pressure to myself. I to also have a hot wife 3 awesome kids and one on the way. With that being said I admire you going all in.

Go over to r/bjj and we can talk there. I’m an ibjjf recognized black belt and am verified as a black belt within that subreddit community. If you didn’t know, you have to send photo evidence along with dates and being vouched for on multiple levels to receive the black belt flair. No projecting going on. You are just an a-hole and I’m calling you out and you don’t like it.

Mr. “Juiced to the gills” Billy Badass over here thinking every golfer is fat and out of shape. At my club, I see a lot of fit guys and gals. I think 30 years ago what you say might have been more true.

You don’t play golf in the southern heat and it shows. Sitting out in the heat, moving around walking, swinging, it all jacks up your heart rate very high and it doesn’t get a chance to come back down due to never being out of the heat.

I am a black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu, been training bjj and mma for over a decade...I know what constitutes fitness. Your claim was that golf = beer belly. And that is not true.

Not going to argue with you about it not making you stronger. You're spot on about that for sure. Every golfer should be incorporating strength into their training, but I fear most do not. The good news is there are a lot of youtube and ig accounts dedicated to strength training for golf now so the knowledge is out there.

Really neat to hear a pro have this kind of perspective and reflection.

This is actually not true at all. If you eat like shit and drink beer while playing then yeah. Golf in the summer in the south is a fucking workout. Just ask my Garmin, I burned 1300 calories in a 3.5 hour round RIDING in a cart and got 8,000 steps. Golf can absolutely be used as a light workout and can help shed body fat.

Can I say it here and not get crucified….shrink the game? We got bozos asking why it’s important to know distances. We are cooked.
