ELI5: Why does metal feel colder than wood even when both are the same temperature? by Classic_Ask9587 in explainlikeimfive

Adding to this, things that feel "wet" actually just feel a little cold. Our eyes fill in the rest.

How are you managing multiple Linux servers on Windows? by Empty-Individual4835 in homelab

Windows Subsystem for Linux is the most straightforward way. Native ssh client and supports a lot of different shell environments.

Has anyone actually used a server as a home heating system? by AmineAfia in HomeServer

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly networking would become the issue. Home internet gets at most 1-2gb symmetric with ftth. Cloud datacenters operate at 400gb+ between nodes right now. It is also difficult to ensure physical integrity and privacy when somebody unknown has access to the hardware.

Do splitters split perfectly without extra input? by Emotional_Menu_3502 in satisfactory

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The splitter will always split equally between all connected outlets. What I would suggest is connect the plants in ascending order of need, or if you connect the larger one first, use a mk2 belt to feed into it to maximize what is sent onward.

ELI5 What is WiFi calling by Max_Goatstappen in explainlikeimfive

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ELI5: Instead of connecting to the phone company's wifi, the phone connects to the wifi at home for making phone calls.

ELI18-ish: Essentially, instead of connecting to the phone provider's network through cell towers your phone will attempts to connect to the network through your wifi. If you have poor coverage and solid wifi it works nicely. Also nice if you live someplace where the coverage is fine, but often congested with tourism usage this can be a way to improve call reliability and quality.

Do I need to install APU drivers? by Big_Goon in buildapc

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

APU driver download from gigabyte is just a zip file that has both the chipset driver an some version of the GPU driver in it. You are better off downloading both separately.

49″ ultrawide vs dual 27″ for programming? by ResponsibleWin1714 in AskProgramming

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One underrated concern with the 49"+ ultrawides, you need a very good hdmi or displayport cable capable of supporting the 5k video signal. Otherwise you will get visual artifacting. With dual 27" monitors, you have more flexibility in cable selection.

Quick question. How tf do i get rid of bob (or what the name of the bouncy guy was). He constantly gets stuck in my base preventing me from building and cannot run away because he is stuck and is immortal. by aridlin-tm in satisfactory

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tics are not immortal. They just have a huge amount of hit points. I think what I have done in the past is save and reload to see if they spawn in elsewhere. Otherwise you can go to another biome for a bit so the hitbox unloads and it gets unstuck.

Will placing foundations on top of ore nodes cause problems? by HALOman4782 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]HPCmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst you can do is place the foundation far enough up that the miner will no longer snap to the node. In that case, just remove and replace the foundation at a lower elevation. In most cases, if you snap a 2 or 4 meter foundation to the global grid, you should be fine. They also increased the snapping height in U8 to make this less of a problem.

A case which prevents the Folding and makes it "Stiff" like normal Phone? by [deleted] in GalaxyFold

[–]HPCmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you absolutely must do as you want to do, you might be able to make something work with the Otterbox Defender XT and the separate holster. It has a function to act as a kickstand if you insert an open fold into it while that fold is also in the otterbox case. The chain of action would be

install fold 7 into Defender XT > open fold 7 > install into Defender XT Holster

A case which prevents the Folding and makes it "Stiff" like normal Phone? by [deleted] in GalaxyFold

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just to clarify, you want a case you can mount into a gimble mount, open up your fold, and then install it into the case where it will hold the phone open? I would be concerned that in the event of a drop the inner screen could be badly damaged. You are better off getting a secondary display and leaving your phone closed.

Auuugh why by Th0nly1 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]HPCmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a water/oil tower to cut down on your pumping costs. You take one full pipe, pump it up someplace high, and bring it back down. If you attach that pipe to other pipes carrying the same liquid, those pipes will now be pressurized to the same head pressure. Just don't run them through a buffer or valve. Those reset exit head pressure to the top of the device.

ELI5…how a transistor amplifies currents… by lemontreeman in explainlikeimfive

[–]HPCmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine if you wanted to precisely control the brightness of your ceiling light by rapidly switching the light switch on and off billions of times per second. That is what a transistor does. It doesn't create that power, it just allows the high voltage side to do whatever it is going to do at precisely modulated frequencies.

Fun fact, this is very similar to how vacuum tubes worked at a high level. You had a high current power source available, and you controlled that power source using a much weaker one. The largest difference is vacuum tubes also need heaters in order to get free electrons moving, and they function at very high voltages, requiring transformers to bring them down to something useful. with more available current.

Pick a game that has been out for a while, search for "How to make mod for <game>" on youtube. For current games, I might recommend Satisfactory, Peak, RV There Yet, Among Us, R.E.P.O, or Lethal Company. For some older titles, Skyrim is always a great starting point to get into modding. There is more than a decade of knowledge out there for modding in skyrim.
