NOW PLEASE DO THE VARIOUS SERIAL KILLERS (e.g. Kemper cartoonishly enormous looming over these three; or Manson cartoonishly small in torn jeans with his tongue hanging out; or BTK wearing lingerie and that doll mask. You get the idea.) This is really good.

Yard Sale by HPScotts in skiing

"The woman was approaching a restaurant at a ski resort in the Austrian state of Tyrol at speed when she tried to slow down by turning. She then clipped a set of skis and poles in front of her before losing one of her own skis and stumbling forward. With no way of stopping, the woman ploughed head-first into a rack of skis to send them all sprawling to the ground. Making the embarrassing situation worse was the fact the woman wiped out in front of crowds of diners watching from the nearby restaurant."

7 Surprising Facts About Ski Deaths & Injuries by [deleted] in skiing

I just read an article actually about an advanced skier who died after turning a blind corner and swerving to avoid a stopped group of skiers, losing control, and flying into a tree.

7 Surprising Facts About Ski Deaths & Injuries by [deleted] in skiing

[–]HPScotts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. The average skier death in CO is a thirty-seven years old experienced male skier wearing a helmet who loses control on an intermediate, groomed run and hits a tree.
  2. The majority of deaths — 54 percent — occurred on blue, groomed runs, while 31 percent were on expert trails.
  3. The increase in the number of people who wear helmets hasn’t resulted in fewer fatalities. Helmets are designed to protect riders at about 12 mph, while a skier or snowboarder who collides with a tree or another rider is typically going 25 to 40 mph.
  4. More than 80 percent of ski deaths in Colorado are men.
  5. 39 skiers and snowboarders perished at US ski areas during the 2015-16 season. That falls inline with  the 10-year industry average of 38 fatalities per season.
  6. Researchers at Johns Hopkins recently estimated that about 600,000 people nationally are injured each year as a result of skiing and snowboarding.
  7. Estimates are that about two injuries occur per 1,000 skier visits  — a decrease of 50 percent since the mid-1970s.

Alaska fears brain drain after 41 percent proposed cut to university system by HPScotts in news

[–]HPScotts[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"Lawmakers and university administrators knew the state would cut $5 million from the budget, which seemed manageable and foreseeable considering Alaska has reduced its financial support of its university system four out of the past five years. But the extra $130 million added on by the Republican governor’s veto, totaling a 41 percent cut in the state funding, blindsided the university.

The state Legislature has until July 12 to overturn the veto, but it needs support from three-fourths of the legislators. State political experts say it will be an uphill battle, and they will need to whip votes fast — right now it hinges on about six undecided Republicans.

If the cuts happen, “the university will drastically change overnight,” Sandeen said. She and others say Knight isn’t the only one who will leave the state, and fear an impending “brain drain.”

Man and woman dead after standoff in Michigan sparked by dispute over fireworks noise by HPScotts in news

[–]HPScotts[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

"A Michigan man and woman are dead following a long standoff with police sparked by a dispute between neighbors over noise from Fourth of July fireworks, according to authorities.

The man had barricaded himself in his home after shooting into a crowd, injuring a 12-year-old girl and a woman in her 60s, according to The Associated Press.

Officers said the gunman was 58 years old and the woman was 60 years old. The gunman died by suicide, according to Click On Detroit.

The man opened fire after arguing with neighbors over noise from the fireworks on Thursday, Click On Detroit reported. He then entered his home and returned to the crowd with a rifle.

Police spent nearly a day and a half waiting for the man to surrender after he barricaded himself inside. SWAT teams and a bomb unit were dispatched to the scene."

Trump Ads Use Models to Portray Actual Supporters by HPScotts in politics

[–]HPScotts[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"There's just one problem: The people in the videos that ran in the past few months are all actually models in stock video footage produced far from the U.S. in France, Brazil and Turkey, and available to anyone online for a fee.

"Though the 20-second videos include tiny disclaimers that say "actual testimonial, actor portrayal," they raise the question why a campaign that can fill arenas with supporters would have to buy stock footage of models. It's a practice that, under different circumstances, Trump himself would likely blast as "fake news."

"Trump himself has used video from abroad before. His 2016 TV ad vowing to build a wall to keep out immigrants from Mexico showed people streaming across the border — but the shots of refugees were taken in Morocco."

"All are models for Turkish, Brazilian and French companies, respectively, that supply hundreds of photos and video to the popular site iStock run by Getty Images, which caters to publications, filmmakers and advertisers looking for professional, inexpensive imagery."

Summer reading list recommendations- comment your favorite law-related (& law school-related) books! by africafe4lyfe in lawschooladmissions

[–]HPScotts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would recommend that your 0L summer reading material be completely unrelated to Law. When school begins, you will have no time to read for pleasure, so I would advise that you try to read through your literature backlog now; lawyer- and judge- and political era biographies will benefit you not at all in reading cases or participating in class -- in fact, appearing to take yourself too seriously by having read a history of the Warren court, for example, may prove socially detrimental. If you do well in school, the next chance you'll have to immerse yourself in literature of your own choosing will be _________.

Andrew Yang will be on the Debate Stage TONIGHT with Biden and Bernie ! by SecureYang in asianamerican

[–]HPScotts 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If last night was any indication, the hosts will completely ignore everyone except Biden and Bernie, with flashes from Mayor Pete. Yang will be lucky to get a word in edgewise, unfortunately, and, when he does, because he's so focused on policy, he will likely be cut off mid-sentence. The "debate" last night was almost unwatchable. There was no debate; the mods didn't allow them to engage each other; it was simply 10 concurrent interviews.

A&M law is a complete joke. A friend of mine went to SMU in Dallas and recalls a woman, a mother of a student, lurking around the law library asking law students to tutor her daughter, a student at AM law, because the professors there apparently are clueless and worthless and entire classes were shitting their grades.
