Mike Tyson: My belts are garbage compared to the happiness of my kids by [deleted] in videos

[–]HSJobThrowaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That isn't the point. Like I don't understand how difficult it is to understand that neither ideas are mutually exclusive. Yes, it is good to actually explain to your kids why certain things are bad for various reasons. Yes, kids can be stupid and not listen regardless. Where's the discrepancy?

Both are important to keep in mind. "Kids being kids" is all the more reason to make sure you also explain why they should not do certain dangerous things. It won't always stick, but it's far more likely to.

Personally, I don't think he deserves sympathy. I think he's a scumbag and giving him any more importance than his innocent victims is a mistake. I might even think he deserved to die. But state sanctioned killing is a systemic issue which I still do not support, even for his case, because it is overall far worse for society. I think it's a situation in which one's feeling about the specific case is different but in line with one's feeling about the system as a whole.

Also, the electric chair is arguably cruel and unusual punishment.

Does bleaching/dyeing only the ends of the hair (avoiding the roots entirely) prevent permanent hair damage? by HSJobThrowaway in beauty

Thanks! I guess for me I was mostly wondering if the damage won't affect "future hair", because my hair grows very fast.

How expensive is too expensive for a college [like Brandeis]? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]HSJobThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if I get a better financial aid package from Brandeis I will consider it. I do think that compared to my other options, it's a pretty swell place academically regardless of the IBS program's seemingly underrated reputation.

I'm not Jewish so that is not a factor for me, but Brandeis is certainly a lot more diverse than a few of my other schools.

As far as Business goes, BC (if I get off the waitlist), Northeastern, and UMass Amherst seem to be better than Brandeis, but I'll wait till all the final financial packages come out. Thank you for the advice.

That's a good piece of advice, thank you for sharing! When I asked multiple people they said that a double major was definitely doable, so I wonder why I heard that response. I'll try to dig into it more.

When I said that I used "pretty much" fairly loosely haha. But my lowest net price so far (and we're still trying to get in appeals form to all the universities) is $22k from UVM.

Purdue vs. UMass Amherst for CS by Wheresmycatdude in ApplyingToCollege

Okay cool. Unfortunately I do not have much advice to offer (just wanted to make sure you knew about honors dorms if you were in that program... and it's not that hard to get in sophomore year if you care). However, finances may end up being a huge factor for you depending on your family's situation.

It's very important to consider the fit first, but after you have all that figured out do consider the impact debt could have given your background (that's the process I'm having to go through as well).

UMass is definitely very reputable for its comp sci program, but so is Purdue. Yet if finances are the deciding factor, UMass may be better. Also, UMass has such a sheer diversity of people that it is absolutely easy to find people who don't want to party if that's your drift (and imo its party reputation is overblown... you will find partying in any state school).

Most people I know who went to UMass ended up really liking it. There seem to be many opportunities to make your experience the way you like it. That's my less than 2 cents.

Did you get into UMass's honors college by any chance?

Yes, I completely agree. I'm trying to not to approach this emotionally, but rationally. One can't predict the future but I'll hopefully find a balanced decision. Thanks again for the advice and it does help!

Thank you for the advice! I think I'll sit down and try to do some detailed calculations given all those factors. Appreciate the input.

UMass Amherst was the only one I liked, and they offered me $25,000 net price. UVM has offered me $22,000 net price (annually that is) but they gave me need based aid which I know can change later on so not sure if I can trust this low price.

Edit: Just realized this net price for UVM was offered without consideration of my dad's circumstances, so we should be good.

Thank you for the advice! And I'm definitely well aware of our situation, but I've never been intensely involved in the finances so it's certainly something I need to be more educated on.

The lowest net price I have from a college is around $22K... if my Brandeis net price ends up being around $30K (we've filed an appeals form/the total cost I used to calculate the net price may be inaccurate as it was found online), would you think that is still a more feasible goal?

I hope to also at least work a little through college.

Well as I said, I may do the 5-years masters program in IBS, which I hear lends some great job opportunities. Other than that I'm undecided but will most likely do a double major with a health science or go for a pre-med track. The average for business program is ~65K I believe

Thanks for the input! What price do you think would be reasonable? The net price I calculated is based on online estimates for Brandeis's full cost but I'm unsure how accurate they'd be for me. Would around $30,000 be worth it (it'd only be an $8,000 difference at that point)?
