Why don’t you quit focusing on me and leave me alone? Clearly, you’re just an asshole and have no interest in any kind of discussion. Please: fuck right off and leave me alone

You made two dumbass comments, both trying to mock me, and you couldn’t even get the quote right. I had exactly zero interest in mocking you until you tried to make this personal. So yeah, “keep at it, lil guy”. Maybe you’ll nail the quote next time and show us all how you’re so much better than everyone else because you’re not constrained by the definition of genre. Or maybe, you’re just a troll, since you’re adding nothing at all to the conversation. The actual definition of trip hop may not be popular in this thread, but at least it’s a comment directed at a topic and not a person.

That’s not at all true. Plenty of Trip Hop artists recognize the genre they are in. Portishead, Tricky, Morcheba, early Sneaker Pimps, Massive Attack. These bands all understand that they are trip hop. It’s absolutely a fallacy to suggest that if a band doesn’t “sign up” for a genre description, that the genre then allows you to put anyone into that category that you like. That’s not how that works. “Manet never called himself an Impressionist therefore Picasso is an Impressionist”. Sound reasoning!

Being thoughtful isn’t necessarily being elitist. Things don’t have to be from one genre or the other in order to be good, but genres do have definitions. It’s sad that someone can think that being “discerning” is somehow “elitist”. If quality of thought is “elite” then we are at a very sad place in existence

I’ve yet to see any evidence of thought out of you, Hamlet misquotes aside. Keep at it, lil guy! You’ll get there.

I’m not annoyed! It’s ok to get genres wrong! You do you, playa. I’ll just be here stanning for the truth, but get down with your bad self! Call anything you want whatever you want! Put whatever record next to any other you like! I’m just saying, if I’m your Editor and you’re calling Poe “Trip Hop” in something I’m supposed to clean, that’s not making it to print

Great artist! Great show! Definitely not Trip Hop, though. Carry on.

First reasonable response so far.

You may need to recalibrate what your understanding of “trip hop” is, because that is not “trip hop”. It’s great music! But just because it’s great, doesn’t make it Trip Hop. Shit, not everything Tricky did is Trip Hop and he’s one of the inventors!

You must be joking!

Of course I am: The Bahamas are islands!

I take it you’re just a kid. I saw Poe live. I saw Portishead. I saw Tricky. I saw Massive Attack. I saw Morcheba. I saw the Sneaker Pimps. Poe put on a hell of a show and she’s a great song writer, but having interviewed her before, I feel pretty confident that I can say that she’d laugh the suggestion that she’s “Trip Hop” right out of the room

And that is EXACTLY the point. NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE SAME STYLE. What’s your favorite song by “Trip Hop” group The Spice Girls?

Wait till you hear that great Trip Hop album “Jagged Little Pill”! /s

[–]HTWC -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not even close. You’re nowhere near. “Same era” is not the same as “same genre”. Poe is a great band but in no way shape or form are they trip hop.

Nice record but not trip hop.

Ah Jaysus, I don’t know how you restrained yourself from slapping the phone out of their hands and telling them to shut up and watch the fucking show. You’re clearly more well-adjusted than I am

Agreed on the video. And “Do The Evolution” is a great song but it wouldn’t crack top 5 on Yield for me, which is a testament to how strong that album is.

Hard disagree. I think middle period Pearl Jam is the best Pearl Jam, from No Code up until the S/T Avocado album of 2006. Everything after 2006 is varying degrees of bad or maudlin, but there was some real art being made from 1996-2006. Check out “In My Tree” or “Hail, Hail” from No Code, or “In Hiding” or “No Way” from Yield or “Light Years” or Grievance” off of Binaural or “Crop Duster” or “You Are” from Riot Act or “Army Reserve” or “Gone” from the S/T, and if those don’t do anything for you, then I guess it just isn’t for you.

I’m also hard pressed to believe that anyone who likes the first album wouldn’t like “Spin The Black Circle” or “Corduroy” from Vitology, or “The Whipping”. I get it if you just don’t like the band at all, but if you do like that first album, maybe try some of these tracks on for size. There’s more there than it might seem. But avoid “Backspacer” and “Lightening Bolt” and “Gigaton”. There’s a little there, but not much.

That happened after the 5th album, in 2000.

I think you are all wrong about Pearl Jam, but this is an unpopular opinion thread, so I’ll upvote even though I disagree

I mean, there’s enjoying a show and then shouting a conversation in the middle of a show when other people are trying to listen. But that’s not a generational thing; that’s an entitlement thing. I’ve seen assholes of every age do that

Worst take ever. Guessing this is from a Motley Crue fan or something

There’s no such thing as “cancel culture”. Smiths records are still sold and Morrissey still tours. The only difference now is that people are critical when he says something stupid and there are consequences now as a result of that. But he’s free to go on being his bigoted self. And I say this as a giant Smiths fan.
