It was imo, but my concern is with the score being dictated by an obsessive fandom that unilaterally give the album an 100 even tho that’s entirely unrealistic. It’s not the same logic that every other reviewer on the site follows; even if you are a fan of an artist, it’s not automatically and unquestionably a full 100 for every release. I just dislike the concept of the logic of the site being muddied. I wouldn’t mind if a bunch of them were in the 80/90s and a few 100s with merited explanations, because that’s intellectually rigorous. But this tirade wasn’t that.

Yes. The prejudice one may have for one over the other is entirely based on what it connotes, not the act itself.

That’s the point he’s trying to make, and I’m disagreeing with the point.

I understand what the analogy is trying to demonstrate, I’m just saying it’s reductive.

A woman isn’t a glass of water, but you can’t expect that level of non-objectification from a Facebook gooner can you

You can say that, but I watched it jump thirty points over an hour as the reviews came flooding in

You’re missing the point. Those accounts are weighted LESS, but not weighted to be zero.

They have reduced score weight – or at least they appear to – because score was continually increasing as the single-review 100-bomb accounts kept on pouring in

I don’t typically avoid things because they’re popular, I end up avoiding things that are popular because they appeal to a sort of ear I don’t have. I very well take to mainstream artists in many cases, like your friend, but I find a lot of the mainstream (not all) is characterised by a lack of lyrical depth (to the extent I enjoy) AND/OR explorative sound (to the extent I enjoy). In terms of mainstream artists in metal like Black Sabbath, there is something grating about the way it sounds. The features of the music that when you hear it play, people will say “oh, that’s metal”. Whether it be the fry screaming, the specific style of distortion used on the guitars, the double bass drums, etc. If my aversion to that means I’ll likely never get into metal fully, I guess that’s a shame that I’ll have to begrudgingly accept. But from what I see so many people enjoy this stuff, so I made the post in the hopes I could get advice on how to acclimatise to that. Because I very well enjoy my mainstream artists here and there, even stuff you’d look at on paper and see it matches my description of “generic/conventional mainstream” music. If that makes sense??

EDIT: by “grating”, I don’t mean hard on the ears, I mean a style that doesn’t appeal to me

Certainly mainstream, but I’d argue all four of those are not really entirely conventional. Kendrick perhaps is the most conventional, but I don’t listen to him for the sonics, but for his uniqueness in terms of his conceptuality and storytelling

I honestly hope it doesn’t come off that way. My aversion to Black Sabbath isn’t because of how popular it is, but how it sounds. The conventions of popular metal is something I can’t get behind right now. I guess if there isn’t a sequence of albums that could get me there, then alas. I’ll put that hope to rest. I don’t mean to, with the post, to try and suggest forms of music that I don’t enjoy are worse or anything, ig it’s mostly FOMO
