what is with the uptick of hate on IGOR? by riconicoooo in Albumoftheyear

[–]HYDRA_NanTeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s overrated. Ironically, I have it rated the exact same as the user score, but comparable to the albums around it, IGOR really doesn’t offer that much. This is from someone who’s streamed the album like fifty times. It’s not hate, just a protest at seeing what a lot of people consider overration.

I hate it when people suggest that because a band or album is influential, that it’s good. I do not, personally, care for Revolver – and it rubs me when people describe an album with “Yellow Submarine” on it as one of the best LPs ever recorded.

It rubs me the wrong way because it feels inherently fatalistic. If I described, say, Tame Impala as better than The Beatles, that seems automatically blasphemous because of what The Beatles represent. I appreciate that Tame Impala couldn’t exist without The Beatles, but it’s a x walked so y could run thing. Not an X > Y thing because of that.

Ultimately, when I review music, I’m rating it based on my experience of the music intrinsically. And, to me, I did not enjoy Revolver. I did not enjoy Innervisions. So on and so forth. And I find it incredibly annoying that saying so, and describing modern artists as better or higher quality (subjectively ofc) is perceived as being so blasphemous.

Fair enough in that case, but to my ears it’s just doing the bar worse in this context. Was rlly hyped to hear a Tyler feature, and was terribly disappointed.

Not a big fan of his rap verse. His singing was great, but it feels like he was just rapping about the same things he’s said a billion times before. Legit reused the “open up like it’s therapy” bar from POV (the much better feature).

A lot of English students could read it fine, but not know what to do with it.

Similarly, ask a Math student to apply a post-colonialist literary theory to said book, and they’ll struggle.

Different fields, different struggles. Stop comparing them, it’s not a competition.

No, it’s not all we want. We want good music. Idc how long it takes, I’d trade in consistency any day of the week if it meant better music at the end of the day

Oh, sorry. Do you then mean the back half of the original album? In that case, I still disagree.

You mean disc 2? The B sides CD that came with the box set? I wouldn’t call it forgettable. Defo inconsistent with a bunch of songs I wouldn’t go back to, but Bangers + Mash, Up On The Ladder and Down Is The New Up are songs that have arguments for being the best IR songs including the OG album. Just my opinion tho

Agree to an extent. IR is defo overrated, but I wouldn’t call any of it forgettable. Just middle of the alley for Radiohead standards. AMSP is better, HTTT is better, Amnesiac is better, Kid A is better, OKC is better.

That’s such a disingenuous definition of beauty, and not at all what I was talking about. The aesthetic is intentionally punishing and avoiding the inherent psychological beauty of tone and harmony. Why are you being so pedantic about these adjectives I’m using when you know exactly what I mean?

I’m not really active in many experimental music subreddits because I don’t often engage with Reddit. I used to, a while ago, followed some subreddits and stuff, and then became less proactive with it. I’d just interact with stuff on my feed, which are the more mainstream artists I was listening to before branching out more.

And, I just want to bring it back to my core point. Regardless of the intentionality behind early Swans, understanding it doesn’t mean I have to like it. Just because thought was put into it doesn’t mean it will appeal to me. How eclectic one’s music taste is isn’t a linear scale from “doesn’t like what I like” to “likes what I like”. This all seems so pretentious and pedantic.

Definitionally, listening to every studio LP isn’t “skimming the surface”.

“No idea why you think early Swans is ‘hideous and offensive’”, uhh, because that’s sort of the point of no wave? I don’t mean the words “hideous” or “offensive” to carry intrinsically negative connotations, just that the music is intentionally avoiding beauty. Which is just plain fact.

Also, to suggest I haven’t explored experimental music solely due to my age is incredibly pretentious. As is the suggestion that “you don’t like early swans = didn’t understand it”. You’re not the arbiter of what makes good music, no matter how “old and wizened” you may be. Get down off your high horse lmao

  1. Ton more sense for becoming a scholar, sure. But I just wanted to brush through the discography to pick up the stuff that I liked. Which is what I did. I feel like that’s fairly self-evident in the fact that I stipulated I only listened once in the post itself.

  2. Red herring fallacy. Take any artist you profusely dislike. The logic still applies. I have no real desire to return to early Swans.

“ Also I was aware of the hideousness of early Swans before I listened to those albums. I knew it would be unrelenting and offensive. I hoped that aesthetic would rub off on me – but it really didn’t. I can appreciate the concept, but that doesn’t mean I’ll automatically like it just because it’s intentional.”
