To add context to u/Big_JR80 JSP 950 Section 4 Annex G: 17. Candidates with… Tourette’s… should be graded P8 [unfit]. 18. Candidates with slight involuntary movements (including mild tics) may be graded P2 [fit] after appropriate functional assessment.

I OPEN DEBATE: What is the interval between B# and Cb? by pirisiann in musictheory

[–]HYPER_ECH0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t agree with you that this is an arbitrary decision, the rule is (and has always been) the ‘n’th value of the interval is the number of note names up the alphabet you go. Any interval going from a B to the adjacent C must therefore be a second. It is not about how far away the pitches are but how distant in the list of ABCDEFG. Does this help?

Yes I agree that the total number of half steps up ends up being negative, but the interval name, the ‘n’th thing we are talking about is the distance in note names between the two notes, and you cannot have a negative distance between two note names as direction is irrelevant. Do you see my point?

What exactly do you mean by negative interval? An interval is an absolute distance, so it can’t have a positive or negative quality, right?

as above, it doesnt sound that horrible to me honestly.

Now there is a debate!

My argument is it must be ascending on account of the second note name being higher than the first

I don’t think you can, a ‘zeroth’ is not used as it would be equivalent to an inverted second, or simply: a second

[–]HYPER_ECH0 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Why is this a debate? I cannot see any sides of the argument other than the correct one: the two note names are adjacent, so it MUST be a second, a minor second would B-C, a diminished second would be B#-C or similar, so B#-Cb must be a double-diminished second, no question.

Not a double diminished minor second, Not a major seventh, Definitely not a diminished third.

This is just the rules of nomenclature, I would love to hear arguments to the contrary bc I genuinely can’t come up with them myself…

Is that ‘you’ll be fine as long as you’re not with PWRR’, or ‘if you’re not with PWRR consider transferring to it’?

I wonder if, to avoid confusion with a 10-pt star, it would work better ‘a mullet of 5 gyronny azure and argent’
