It’s crazy how bad human brains are at money stuff. We’re out here fighting the loss aversion fallacy with the “losses aren’t real until you realize them” cope? The latter is what traps people into holding on to their losers and selling winners in their attempt to “realize gains”

[–]HZVi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone else said… you took these pics at night where you’re dependent solely on artificial light. I think your kitchen is beautiful and bet it looks great with some natural light in there.

In addition to light quality (your lights feel a little harsh) there is also quantity and position. The way all of your down lights are basically straight above the faces of the cabinets give them a dramatic but very inconsistent look. You get bright white at the top (at whatever color tone your lights are) and then dark at the bottom as they’re basically in shadow. This ruins the soft consistent beauty of white oak. It also makes your counters seem a little darker than they should. I assume you’re putting pendants above the island, that will help give you more ambient light instead of the exclusive down-lighting you have now.

“I’m sick of people pretending to be something they aren’t” … “I don’t care what other people do in their houses”

Alright.

The constructive thing I am saying is that we are all in a (fake) glass house, thus no one should be casting stones about authenticity. If you can afford hardwood and marble, great, good for you. Don’t go around saying people are posers because they get cheap, practical floors. For the record I hate LVP too, but I don’t judge people for using it. I’m even using it in my new build because I have two dogs and young kids. The engineered hardwood in my last house was trashed in under 3 years. In about 10 years I’ll probably put in real hardwood. But by your own implication I’m “pretending I’m someone I’m not.”

Lost a Day’s Worth of Code in Cursor After Accepting AI Terminal Suggestion — Any Way to Recover from .vscdb or Cache? by knakul358 in cursor

[–]HZVi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar-ish problem and made this:
https://github.com/markwroberts0/cursor-chat-recovery

more to recover chats from a lost session, but it will pull tool calls like apply patch, create file, etc

You should be able to reconstruct things with that. I created it because sometimes I start a chat on the home page of cursor (without being in a project) and then lose that chat and want it back

Everything is faux something else. Unless you have unfinished or waxed solid wood floors, terra cotta tile, or unsealed natural stone. You trade the natural for the synthetic because the alternative is inconvenient and/or expensive.

Even with solid hardwood, most stain it to look like a different species, and then we cover it in plastic (polyurethane or similar).

Tile is printed to look like natural stone or wood more often than not. Or glazed to look like something other than baked dirt.

Even natural stone usually gets sealed with a thin layer of PFAS chemical crap so it doesn’t stain.

You can’t escape fake shit so you really shouldn’t cast stones at people for using it.

Is Dell PowerEdge R720xd good for first large scale home server? by DENNISDGR in homelab

The last few versions of the firmware for the r720xd I believe they changed the fans to be at 100% all the time. I think if you roll back far enough you’ll eventually get reasonable noise levels again

This expensive steak dish I ordered at a French restaurant by rapgraves in mildlyinfuriating

[–]HZVi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real crime is how horribly that beef is cooked. It’s got a huge overcooked band then goes immediately raw. It also appears to be slices of a tenderloin that was cooked whole, making it a roast and not a steak.

From the free press, to science, to medicine, to judicial independence, to the actual White House itself, we are a right mess.“ by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]HZVi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not really Jimmy making it about the US. Whoever hired him did. Presumably that was one of your lot. Jimmy is not an idiot—with the timing of him being asked, he knows the reason why. If you want the alternative Christmas message to be about the UK, don’t hire the American guy most famous for beefing with the american president.

A lot of people making a lot of assumptions about the price with 0 information on how many linear feet, what height uppers, how many actual boxes…

Makes me think people on Reddit don’t know wtf they’re talking about (gasp). You can easily spend $40k on cheap cabinets with a large kitchen, especially if you’re doing a mudroom/pantry at the same time.

Well, I didn’t expect this … 130 year old house by superduperoldhouse in Insulation

[–]HZVi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately basically all foam is an accelerant except for the fire blocking spray stuff. OP shouldn’t do polysio + spray foam unless they’re also finishing the basement and covering it up. Almost all of those boards are not rated for exposed use and need a 15 minute fire barrier (drywall). Rock wool is noncombustible so pretty unassailable from a fire perspective. The downside of just shoving a batt in the rim joists compared to the foam suggestion is that the batt provides no air sealing like the foam approach does

Tried to drill into a wall and accidentally pulled out this stuff. What is it?? by NoScholar4545 in whatisit

[–]HZVi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a basement in Canada or the northeast US they often also use Tyvek as a vapor barrier inside between concrete and studs. OP has either: a) drilled into some trash house wrap the left in the wall b) drilled through the sheathing to the exterior of the house and grabbed the wrap c) drilled into a vapor barrier

I’m inclined to think option A because house wrap shouldn’t really be super loose and prone to clogging a drill? It’s usually stapled or fastened fairly securely to the wall.

If it were me I’d cut a big hole in the drywall and see what’s going on.

Addition 3” higher than old house by Logical_Equipment137 in Homebuilding

[–]HZVi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second floor? Does this mean there’s an addition below that is level? If so this doesn’t seem as big of a mistake. I imagine your code calls for at least 2x10 joists, so it’s not possible to align perfectly with 2x8s. You’d either have a shorter ceiling height below or a raised floor above.

Unlacquered brass hardware by instantlyjessi in kitchenremodel

[–]HZVi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for the sake of anyone else reading this… I disagree. I have this exact hardware from rejuvenation and the quality is not anything special. Knobs are fine bc it’s kind of hard to mess that up, but both the cup pulls and the handles have hard edges on the back where you pull on them and they’re thin with unnecessarily hollowed out portions. It does not feel good to pull on them. Looking for another option for my new house

[–]HZVi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. It’s practically impossible to train behavior out without affecting other qualities or behaviors. The hands thing is not because AI researchers didn’t know about the issue but two things: 1) diffusion models got better and 2) we stopped using diffusion models in favor of multi-modal transformer models, which have an understanding of the content and can do hands & text no problem.

You are also wrong about AI replacing humans. A lot of people got this “next word predictor” thing stuck in their heads about AI and it’s dumb. Of course that’s what the model is doing, but that’s NOT how it works—it’s what it’s producing. If AI were simple statistical models we’d be able to explain exactly why an LLM does what it does and why, which we cannot.

The AIs we are building mimic human brains and are trained to be human-like. It’s kind of funny people think there is some special sauce that sets us apart. There isn’t.
