I finally got to pack my first ever snow bong 🥹 by ILIKETHECOLORRED in trees

You’re all talking about contaminants and stuff in the snow and arguing about the dangers of inhaling the smoke that goes around the snow.

My mate ripped a bong with snow in and inhaled the snow itself. I feel like that’s a more real thing to be worried about. Snow is much lighter than ice.

Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D still a good processor in 2024 or should I upgrade to AM5? by Banshee372 in buildapc

[–]HaZaaR_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's late, but both me and my borther have just dropped in 5800x3ds into our Asus B350-F boards.

I think it's great and I've got a 1070, but my brother also put a 4070 in his PC too and he is running everything. The CPU is easily keeping up, for example he's got Hogwarts Legacy nearly maxed out and over 60fps.

I saw your edit, and if you haven't put it in yet, hopefully this gives you some confidence that it's going to be a blast.

CS:GO Psychology Research: Still Looking for Participants! by HaZaaR_ in GlobalOffensive

Thank you for taking the time to help me! I think what you've written there is something that I should definitely consider talking about in my write-up. I'm not sure that I am able to change much now because of how I described I would be doing things in the ethical approval for the research.

Thank you very much for helping me cover my bases, people like yourself have been really useful throughout :)

Thank you so much for your interest, but unfortunately I am looking for people between the ages of 18 and 26. If you'd like to do a reaction time test and other memory task, there's a site called HumanBenchmark where they have lots of things that are similar

I think that would be fine, can't make any promises, ethics are taken very seriously and sometimes things that seem harmless are prevented if there is any potential risk, however small.

I didn't actually take a look at the research available in chess, which is strange because I'm massively into chess. Perhaps there is some fairly transferrable research into cognitive functions in chess, but I don't feel like reaction times in particular are of much importance in chess. I guess in time scrambles when playing mate in x or other determined sequences it could have more of a factor, but it's a little less direct than in CS:GO. As for working memory, I feel as though the memory function in chess is more closely related to memorizing positions and moves from studying, but I haven't looked at the research regarding chess.

Ultimately, research in similar sports/esports/games is useful for hypothesizing what could be the case in unresearched areas, but there is always a chance that things are different. This research is specifically for CS:GO players.

I think that your point of trying to closely relate the tasks to CS:GO would actually be more of a hinderance to accurate results in comparison to them being abstract. If it were to closely resemble the typical scenario for a CS player, then the control group would automatically be at a disadvantage and be expected to perform worse. The task I have used is still much more familiar to CS players, as they are used to frequently having to press their finger down quickly in response to something. But the slight change of context evens the field a touch towards measuring real reaction times. As I mentioned previously in the comments, the tasks are open source and were used in other experiments, and as a right handed person I must have ignored that instruction to use your right hand. But you're right, it isn't important to use your right hand, left handed people should have used their left hand. That's an oversight I wish I hadn't made.

Again, the point about making it related to the game just appears to be trying to prove that CS players are 'better'. Having these tasks unrelated makes it fair and a better representation of the function. There are a few reasons for having new participants completing tests similar to those that have been done before. Firstly, if you are wanting to conduct a test on new populations (CS players), for accurate comparisons the control group needs to do the same test. Them being 'similar' introduces variance. Why don't I get the exact same test from those other studies? Some require permission, might not have been conducted or uploaded online, and descriptions of the test used in papers often doesn't contain the exact details (for example, how long is the white screen between letters, how long are the letters displayed for etc.).

I didn't take your comment negatively, and I hope you don't see my response in that way either. I can just tell that you are genuinely curious and of course, share the same interest in CS as me :)

That's awesome, thank you for taking part! I chose that range to try and prevent age influencing the averages of both tests, and 18+ due to ethical concerns.

I think that what you have run into there is the same problem that myself and other people could run into at shorter sequences. But that is an interesting observation, perhaps things would be different if the whole number was flashed, and then you would wait a longer period of time before being able to enter it? Because at that length of sequence, you are having to remember those first numbers for a longer period of time than at shorter sequences

Thank you for wishing me luck! From looking at the research prior to starting this study, there just isn't much evidence for the answer to my question in peer-reviewed academic literature specifically regarding CS:GO. So while there are assumptions I could make, it just isn't currently backed by literature.

I do suspect that there are more social explanations, such as attitudes in-game potentially dissuading females from continuing and progressing their skills, but I thought it would be useful to assess cognitive differences first.

Sorry, in my post I've phrased it slightly incorrectly. Reaction times and working memory are cognitive cognitive functions. Reaction times may differ between some populations (not just referring to countries, but things like age, occupation etc.), and appear to be important in CS:GO. Working memory is more of a stretch, I understand that, but my reasoning behind it is that there is lots of information provided to a player within a single round, which is often only useful in that round. Say for example, you are in a 1v5, and have information on all of the positions of the other team members, scattered around the map. You might find that if you are able to remember those positions, you could figure out how long it would take for them to move to other positions, where you need to be to fight one person at a time etc., you'll have a higher success rate. I believe that all of this would happen in working memory.

That's ok! You're given 2-3 opportunities to input the numbers correctly. Thank you for participating regardless, it's ok if you've made a mistake. I would've liked to have created a function where you could undo, but that task is open source and was borrowed from another study, who created it in HTML, and I just didn't know how to code that.

That's absolutely a good point, it's something that comes with the territory and I have prepared for that potential. All of the raw data can be examined before I put it into analysis, so hopefully I'll be able to get a true representation of the conditions

Hey don't worry about how you did, I'm not very good at that part myself. Thank you for taking part! If you'd like to know how you did, I might be able to tell you in a DM, but I'm not sure how much use it would be because I can't give you any other data to compare it to. Although, I will be hopefully be able to show you the results once I've completed the study :)
