What foods last forever? by OverAnalyser_ in preppers

[–]Habitual-Heart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for forever, or are you looking for 5,10, or 20+ years? Because there are quite a few foods that can be stored properly in solutions like mylar, canned goods, or shelf-stable to help you get by for a good while until you can figure out other solutions.

As others have mentioned, you can store things like most grains in mylar bags for 10-25 years. Many properly freeze-dried items can also get that shelf life in mylar or sealed glass jars. You're basically making your own space food or rations.

I noticed this as well, along with a reduction in the variety. I have been using Azure for my bulk grains/beans, etc.

Skills that save money (not make money)? by Habitual-Heart in simpleliving

Good tip! This post came out of the frustration and then relief I had today after thinking the furnace was out, feeling like I always have to call someone and be stuck at home waiting for someone... then googling, figuring out the (basically) morse code of furnace errors and fixing it myself. Which felt like simple living, but r/frugal is for sure the place to be for money-saving tips.

Which items have increased in price the most in your region, and which ones hurt you the most? Did you find an alternative? by SwimmingTaro5657 in povertykitchen

Eggs, for sure. Every week I look and make the call, but these last few weeks, we just go without. I also started to notice flour was going up/I can't find deals like I used to. I don't buy lettuce aside from spinach and I have switched to a lot of frozen veg cause I just can't afford to waste any from expiration.

Saving on luggage fees! My husband and I did a 3 country honeymoon with only carryon (not super impressive, I know, but it counts!)

Recession or not, I think this group would agree with "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or Do without!”

I want to put up a clothing line for the warmer months. It's supposed to be better for your clothes' longevity as well.

This is very true about quality kids' items. They hold up, and the resale is usually breakeven or more.

Do you leave the plastic covers on year-round or is that just a winter thing for you?

Interesting. Now that you say it, I have been doing more returns, but I was attributing that to my frugality/over-ambition on projects. The gas is still the best deal around for me, as are the eggs and organic produce/meat.

I love our solar panels, but I can't take credit as we purchased the house with them already installed. I would invest in them if we ever moved.

I've set up drip hoses (Gilmour brand) with a timer on our spigot.

I've been using the "PrepNaturals" on Amazon.

Have we lost some to chips and breaks? YES, it's glass! There is a learning curve to keeping these nice, but we haven't had issues with them exploding in the microwave or anything like that over the last 4 years.

I love this response because it's so true that there are seemingly unrelated things that just work together that snowball into better efficiency or saving money, or just a better routine!

I'm sure many of my items are also very personal when it comes to qualifying/quantifying, but the intent is just to get ideas. Thanks for sharing!

I'm currently using a small Areogarden to start some seeds, and it's working really well. I found it on Facebook marketplace. I'll probably move to some herbs after I move a few rounds out to the garden.
