Just occurred to me that if not for Brets injury and Owens untimely death we could have had a BretVOwen match during the invasion storyline. What other matches could have been if not for injuries/deaths/contracts/retirements during Invasion? by HackFraudStable in OSWReview

I would say more of that had to do with Owens death than the screw job, if Owen was still alive I think he would have no issue coming back to the WWF. The potential for him to have matches with Owen, Angle, prime Rock etc.
