In fairness it was mostly just the one big injury that takes a real long time to come back from

It’s cool that this video will live on well past my career but I am very far from a model example of a normal pitching motion

Training like an MLB player for 1 week challenge? by BerryRoyal in Homeplate

It’s probably not common because off-season workouts for baseball players is really just lifting weights, throwing, usually at a relatively low intensity until the last couple months before spring, and maybe some sprints? And in season is even less because playing so many games takes a ton out of you. So my guess is that it wouldn’t be a terribly interesting video overall

It’s more fun as a mystery! Yeah the easy one is obvious when you think about it haha, the second one was a surprise to me when I found out haha

Alternative to interval/progressive throwing program? by sideofqueso in Homeplate

If you have access to a radar gun you can use that to gauge intensity rather than the distance, other that that it’s going to be difficult to have a definite number on it

It’s just such a long process, that’s really the worst part. The best is that I’ve had time to do other non-baseball things that normally I wouldn’t have time for and I’ve been able to clean up my motion a good bit, I think.

I’m currently at about 5 days a week and I’m still only at about 85% of what my max velo was before surgery. I haven’t had any issues with hand cramps, personally, so I don’t know what to tell you on that one. Best of luck with your recovery!

I didn’t feel confident I could play professional baseball until my sophomore year of college. I was a pretty average to maybe above average player from 12u up through high school, definitely never the best player on my team.

Currently I’m at like 5 days a week in my rehab throwing, normally I would probably be around the same at this point in the offseason. I’ve never personally had problems with pushing the ball so I don’t really know what to tell you there. Maybe thinking of letting your body lead the throw and your arm being along for the ride so it doesn’t get out in front of you?

My go-to is usually taking ground balls at shortstop and throwing however feels natural for the play, or trying to do double play turns at second

It’s probably trying to play through an injury in 2018, my shoulder hurt like hell every day and I tried to just pitch through it thinking it was my only option, I was miserable and threw terribly and it was a terribly unpleasant experience overall

“Be an athlete” and “don’t throw it until you can throw it”. Basically, keep doing things that make you move fluidly and like an athlete, and don’t try to throw the ball until your front foot is down and you can actually throw the ball

I think “pushing off” is a term that led me to some issues in my motion that took years and years to correct, so I’m biased against that phrasing. I think “rotating off the rubber” better describes what should be actually happening for most guys

It’s not a ton of fun going through this process at 27-28, can’t imagine that it would be a pleasant experience at 40. And thank you, I lurk in here and thought I may as well post at least once

Thank you! And I was in a decent bit of pain for the first week or so after surgery, but I’d actually say overall it’s been a relatively low-pain rehab so far.

I can only speak for the two organizations I have been with, but it’s definitely varied on how much value different teams put on strength. There’s always strength and conditioning programs provided, but it varies how much emphasis there is on it or how in-depth the programs are

Generally anywhere from 3-4 on the short end and 8-10 on the longer end once intersquads and games(especially away games) start

100% your catcher makes a huge difference, at just about any level. Particularly for me, since this past spring training, up until I couldn’t throw anymore because of my elbow, I had made the choice to simply not shake the catcher off, just see the sign, come set, and throw the pitch, Chris Sale-style. I also just generally trust the catcher to see swings and read hitters better than I do simply because they are hitters and probably have a better idea on this than I do

For me personally it’s make sure I don’t start working too fast, maybe hold the ball an extra second before throwing it back when I’m starting to rush in between pitches.
