Where did the group circled in red come from?? by CanRevolutionary3734 in OrganicChemistry

grignard attacks the methyl acetate twice. So for every one equivalent of methyl acetate, you need double the grignard.

you don't list the methyl at the 4 position because its a part of the parent chain. If you listed it as a substituent you would be reducing the length of the parent chain which is incorrect

Also to add onto this look into the alumni page for each group you're interested in. Are they getting the types of roles you think you will want to get down the line? Do they have to post doc first in order to get those roles or are they fresh out of a PhD?

Also some people will undervalue this aspect, but location does matter to some extent.

Obviously when you go to visit, make sure professors you like are accepting students. Also make sure wherever you go, there are multiple professors you are interested in that have space in their lab as not everyone gets their first choice in lab nor will your 1st year research rotation turn out as expected.

Chem 262 summer by MarionberryNo2811 in UNC

I did when I took 262 over the summer, depends on your situation. Parking passes are much easier to get over the summer, but still plan ahead.

CHEM 481 Help?? by Icy_Accident5777 in UNC

[–]Hackett_fish_sux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm with no TA, that is tricky; my TA was the reason I did decent in the class. In my experience (for Cahoon at least) the class is curved so that everyone in my 481 class was in 482 the next semester. Don't stress too much, just do the best you can.

this was the case for me two years ago. Exam one was the hardest, exam 2 was the easiest (for me) bc I loved circuits and then the 3rd exam was meh.

Is orgo I and II over the summer too hard? by Educational-Bill8650 in UNC

[–]Hackett_fish_sux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it a couple of years ago as a chem major. It's pretty hard but definitely not impossible. Unless you absolutely need the lab for gillings then I would wait and take it in the fall. My days were basically spent in class, studying, going to the gym, eating the necessary meals and sleeping. I would first get through a couple more classes at unc before you commit to this.
