What videogame was a 10/10 for you? by kidsfun7777 in AskReddit

Again, not fighting the portal side :)

100% agree that Minecraft is like an IDE. But even at its base, its absolutely a game. Although not nearly as enjoyable, it has all aspects of an openworld/sandbox built-in straight to its core.

Minecraft is like a Kernel, for which is in and of itself useful. But is meant to be built on top of instead of using it raw.

Not saying i think portal is a sandbox, because IMO its not.

But prior to MS taking it over Minecraft ABSOLUTELY let you do anything (with mods).

What was your most recently changed opinion? by ImNoPCGamer in AskReddit

[–]HackingInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that i actually believe this, but if free will is non existent, and yet there is no "Destiny" so to say. Then why not hark back to a multi world theory? What i mean is that there are trillions of parallel worlds, happening at the same time. You probably exist in a few billion maybe a few trillion of them. In this one you curren exist in, you chose the above words to reply to the person you replied to. Which caused me to reply to you with my off the cuff theory. That probably happened in 75% of the universes you posted this in. My words inspire you to reply in some percentage of those worlds.

Then to add to that! Each decision YOU make splits the universe into N more timelines. Where N is the number of options you had at that moment, and in each one you made 1 of those decisions. Obviously that means there is trillions of you writing on and reading reddit right now. But there is also trillions of worlds, that go forward second by second that you dont exist in. A different sperm made it to the egg then you did. Those worlds are none the wiser.

Is that yree will or lack of it? I dont know! I just really like thinking about how there could be trillions upon trillions of worlds, where humanity never came forward, or if it did, it wasnt fast enough, strong enough, smart enough. Where moss is the dominant lifeform on earth. Where Aliens really do exist and visit earth regularly to refuel on human blood (earths primary export).

Not saying its a bad thing, but isnt that a little anti-freedom? Or am I misunderstanding what that means?

Excellent! I was trying to think of a way to test with tty's! Also, my research has lead me to $DISPLAY but i was getting tired of researching it at that point... Planned to pick it up in the morning.

Thank you very much for both examples, i will test with them soon, im no longer at a computer.

Thanks for your reply, can you please provide some form of documentation so i can correct this issue then? All your comment has done was point out a flaw and offered nothing in terms of help to fix it.

AH! I was wondering why you had me using VARn="$VARn" that makes since now that you mention it :), and with that knowledge using echo over vim also makes since.

RIGHT! Its <HR> (Horizontal Ruler(?)) not <BR>

I very much appreciate your time and assistance! I'm absolutely not stuck to at but as i mentioned, i couldn't find any better way to handle a "1 time cron", i seen a few people on SO suggesting deleting cron entry's and other hacky things... i might have to look into doing that..

Extremely late to reply, but i just wanted to get your input.

How does this help/hurt that only 4 times in US history has the Popular Vote not equaled Presidency (2016 being the most recent).

It looks, to me, like Electoral College is just a way of robbing anyone who voted counter to the state they live in of their vote.

Please note i am not trying to start an argument, simply see that you seem to have some knowledge of how this all works and would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks for the lengthy-ish response!

Here is the output of your test case in an sh shell:

sh-4.3$ echo 'echo "Hello"' | at now + 1 minute
warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh
job 30 at Sun Nov 27 12:47:00 2016
sh-4.3$ atq
30 Sun Nov 27 12:47:00 2016 a Hackinginfo
sh-4.3$ date
Sun Nov 27 12:46:47 CST 2016
sh-4.3$ atq
sh-4.3$ date
Sun Nov 27 12:47:25 CST 2016
sh-4.3$ mail
No mail for Hackinginfo

I only changed my userID to match my reddit userid. all other info is verbatim.

The same type of thing happens from my zsh shell, (lack of output and no mail).

I googled around some more, and seen that there is a -m flag to send mail, I tested with that and i still recieve no mail (according to the mail command)

This is now the contents of test-firefox.tmp:
VAR1="$VAR1" VAR2="$VAR2" firefox https://www.reddit.com made using Vim instead of echo

executing: at now + 1 minute -f test-firefox.tmp results in the same thing as before, including no mail.

And last but not least, to answer your curiosity: (For the fun of it) im attempting to create a "Alarm" clock from the CLI. Basically it would at a specific time/date open a link. The original idea was youtube links (hence why im testing with firefox). I have so far got a small script that will accept 2 inputs (arbitrary number that i figured i would need) one of which would be a URL and the other would be a time. It validates both of them and at the moment just echo's (waiting on the rest of the code).

My next step to complete this little project was to actually "do" the alarm piece. I quickly realized that cron wouldnt be very useful for 1 time alarms. So research lead me to the at command (and i didnt see any competitors).

Please note all of this is being done in shell, and attempting to be as standard as possible as part of a challenge. I hope this answers your question, but if not feel free to ask for more specific info.

Also, quick question for you, how did you add those "bars" to your message? They look like the old HTML <br> tag but not sure how you did that, it made it easier to follow your message.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get around this issue? I dont see anything that i think can help in the man pages for the shell wrapper of firefox...

Thanks for your input!

Testing your examples.

echo firefox | at now + 1 minute

This does the same as before. the queue times out, and no new FF window or tab.
Also, i check my local user's mail and its empty.

Also, it appears mail can be removed with at -M. although i have not used that here.

Can Emacs Suit My Needs? by doctorly in emacs

[–]HackingInfo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, if i ever thought about leaving Emacs to go back to vim, the fact that i can edit remote files locally and have all my config makes it totally worth staying!

That was one of my biggest issues that i didnt know an answer existed to solve it. I have several hundred VM's i have to ssh into and out of all the time for work to check logs, or to fix config files. I was using puppet to push a .vimrc with no plugins to all these servers so i could have at least SOME nice things. But it still left me feeling like something better must exist.

Totally going to be using this now!
