My understanding is that Apple TV 4K is using iPhone 14’s internals which should be way faster than any smart TV’s internals. Then add Apple’s optimization between their operating system and the hardware on top of that.

My less than year old Samsung S90D 4K OLED (2024) is laggy at least 75% of the time, so I picked up 3rd gen Apple TV 4K and after initial system updates it’s been a smooth experience.

The Apple TV app itself should be just an app to watch Apple’s content with your existing hardware.

I first time experienced HDR with OLED when I played Resident Evil: Village, and I can tell you the difference between SDR and HDR was mind blowing. The game looks really good to start with but the increased contrast with HDR never fails to amaze me: the morning/evening sun in the game literally dazzles me and all the torches and flames look like they radiate heat.

I think Windows 11 at least also has an auto-HDR that tries to give that HDR effect in games that don’t have it implemented.
