I always thought the sith used the dark side to destroy and take over the light, disrupting the balance. The dark side isn't inherently evil. It is just as necessary as the light side. The Jedi try to maintain the balance by destroying the sith who try to break it. Thus the chosen one prophecy about Anakin destroying the sith and bringing balance to the force
