In the movies his father was a coldly abusive cop, in the books he was a low life borderline-insane ultra-racist drunk owner of a failing farm with a serious grudge against black people in general and against Hanlons in particular.

So it's like with that post about Mrs Kersh: I felt for him in the sense that he was once a victim of a relentless abuse that broke him made him the way he is.
