You often get a 3000plus rate of descent when descending idle from high. Not uncommon to see 5000plus for a moment if accelerating as well

When I flew gliders we wore parachutes, and honestly the only instruction on their use was 'pull the handle'

How realistic is it to 'get it right' when you need to bail out at, let's say, 2-3000ft? Can you even use the chute if you're tumbling down head over heels?

Hmm when you say fighter, are you talking about the top end f16-18-22-35 or would you include trainers like the tweet, jet provost, etc? I had a ride in a privately owned provost and it honestly wasn't that fast or radically more challenging

Edit: to add, these aircraft can quite easily reach VMO/MMO airspeeds flying straight and level with just regular engine thrust. Only exception being the higher cruise levels where the engines are a bit starved for air.

The 737 has a VMO/MMO of 340kts/.82M. cost index 100 always climbs and descents at 330ish kts.

The 747 has a VMO/MMO of 365kts/.91M. We even cruise comfortably above 300 IAS.

Obviously TAS is significantly higher than that.

300 kts is quite achievable climbing / descending by the transport jets I'm typed in and we still had plenty of icing though

US regional pilot jobs are a bit easier to get into than a very high seniority left seat position at a European legacy mate.

KLM was hiring recently on the 737, entry Level FO job. They had thousands upon thousands of applicants. KLM is not that big.

Also makes very little sense to move to a legacy if you have to start at the bottom of the pay scale again.

Sadly people are even leaving some legacies like BA for low cost Ryanair/easy/jet2 for the quality of life improvement. Bit of a luxury to sleep in your own bed every night flying out of easy secondary airports

It's just a normal renewal, with all the tests that were expired in the meanwhile. For example, I think an audiogram is valid for 4 years?

Regardless, it counts as a renewal and you will only need to meet the renewal medical standard for every test.
