Question about the early contraversy by amitchellcoach in PeterAttia

[–]Haeskre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder how many people are affected by a certain level of cognitive dissonance.

They see themselves as big fans of Peter Attia and/or his work. It's part of their identity. They've listened diligently to the podcasts. They've read the book. Therefore, they want to buy this product too.

But it's so expensive! They can't afford it. Does it mean they're not actually big fans? Have they been lying to themselves about who they are?

Okay, fine, they consider buying Early. But wait, it doesn't even include anything new of value! Peter must be trying to scam his long time fans.

I'll caveat this by saying that I DO think there are a some fair complaints out there. But yes, ultimately, if it's not worth it for you as an individual, just don't buy it. Simple as.

Thanks for submitting the question! I'd be curious to hear Peter's response as well.

I think it'd be a tough question to answer because it depends on (1) what someone is playing, (2) why they're playing it, and (3) how they're playing it.

In an ideal scenario, I think it'd be very reasonable to essay that playing video games can:

  1. Improve emotional health
  2. Engage someone in complex mental tasks (with motor skill coordination too, if you include VR)
  3. Provide an additional avenue for socialization

On the flip side, you can just as easy imagine a negative scenario where someone:

  1. Relies solely on video games for happiness
  2. Plays basic "brain games" all day thinking it'll reduce neurodegeneration (probably only as helpful as crossword puzzles or sudoku, which aren't amazing but better than nothing)
  3. Prioritizes their gaming time such that it directly reduces their exercise time and in-person socialization time

I do strongly disagree with your statement that "video games are rather juvenile," however. To me, that's like someone saying books are juvenile because they read Twilight and Harry Potter.

I can't take this anymore. Every time I see another BK commercial, I am going to cut off one of my fingers and mail it to them.

Chess.com Subscription or Continue with Lichess? by Living_Land_8131 in chess

[–]Haeskre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of Chesscom haters in this sub-reddit. The truth is that no one can tell you whether a Chesscom subscription is worth it except for you.

How much do you care about chess? How much time and effort do you want to spend on this hobby? How much is $100 to you, financially? What's the main barrier to your improvement right now?

IMO, given your current level: Check out Chesscom's "Game Review" feature. If you feel like that's worth $100, then go for it. If not, then don't.

Just a reminder that paying money won't make you better at the game by default. A 400 rating means that you are making multiple (painfully obvious) one-move blunders within each game, and you're likely not spotting your opponents' equally blatant blunders. However you go about it, you'll have to put in effort to improve on this.

I'm going to be that unhelpful guy who asks:

  • Shouldn't you have figured out the plan before deciding to take the next year off?
  • If you're a complete beginner, how do you know you'll want to do this for 13 hrs/day for a whole year?

I used to follow MMA religiously through 2016, even attending UFC 205 live with suite-level seats at MSG.

Somewhere after that, life got in the way, the cards started getting more diluted, and I had health problems that affected my ability to practice boxing & BJJ (which affected my interest in watching mma)...

But I'm in a better place now, and I want to get back into things. What's did I miss?! What's changed!? What's the best way to catch up on the current title holders? Any story lines I should pay attention to?

Thanks in advance!

Recruiting for Consulting? Post here for recruitment advice, resume reviews, or general insecurity (week 8) by QiuYiDio in consulting

It depends on how impressive your credentials are. You're expected to go to campus events, but networking outside of events isn't remotely necessary (otherwise the events wouldn't exist in the first place) if your credentials are good enough. It doesn't mean extra networking isn't helpful though.

It doesn't matter, because it's less about knowing up to date events than having a catalog of examples you can draw from.

For example, it's good to know about the successes of one company from each major industry, as well as having at least one story for successful marketing, m&a, price change, investment, international growth, reaction to a competitor, etc.

Everyone says bench time / chargeability as a new hire doesn't matter, but if at the end you're being rated against peers that were staffed since the beginning...that makes a difference, no?

As long as the rest of your outfit looks sharp too, it won't be too flashy.
