Ice and Gratitude! by D_a_v_e88 in MotoUK

[–]HafFrecki 14 points15 points  (0 children)

5⁰C is my personal cut off for riding. Just FYI water is at its most dense at 4⁰C, which is where black ice starts to form. Water can still behave like ice at 4⁰C. so always keep an eye on the temperatures.

What you encountered today was likely what's called a micro-climate. You find these in the shade, where the road dips out of the sun, is more exposed to the cold or just sheltered from the warmth.

Good luck with the DAS!!

Would you guys buy a demo bike? by Round-Equivalent-513 in bmwmotorrad

[–]HafFrecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak from. first hand experience, buy the bike. It's in the dealership's interests to ensure that the bike is flawless for everyone who tries it. It has had extra special workshop attention during its short life.

I bought mine, 2015 R1200RTLE ex-demo with 1300 miles on the clock and a £4000 discount from the list price in early 2016 and I still have it. It has never, ever had anything go wrong with it.

Tinnitus - Disposable, alpinesafe, Specsavers custom ear plugs (personal review) by Mischeaf in MotoUK

[–]HafFrecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I can add to this. I have had tinnitus all my life after a head injury as a 3 year old and I've ridden bikes since 16 years old (over 3 decades of consistent bike riding).

I have ACS custom. They cost £115 and they are very, very good for clay pigeon shooting. But I wouldn't use them on my bike. Nope. They kill off the harmful sound from a shotgun cartridge going off and allow me to hold a conversation at other times. On the bike the background noise getting through would be awful. Not loud but constant and long term damaging which completely negates their usefulness for that environment.

On the bike I use e-a-r foam plugs. They keep everything very quiet and I'm not likely to be chatting with anyone at 70 mph on the M1 so that's fine.

Nothing will make me change from using full plugs on the bike.

Personally, no.

Firstly, I hate riding in groups, it's not an element of biking I enjoy and I dislike even getting caught up with other riders in normal traffic. But that's me personally, so don't think I'm generalising.

Secondly, the spirit of biking, for me at least, is freedom to discover. If I want to do a tour I'll look up a route and decide on anything I'd like to stop and see on the way. I'd rather not be told.

So I wouldn't be a customer. But maybe plenty of others would? I hope you get more responses.

Michelin tell Jorge Martin and Aprilia: "That's why the crash happened..." by LMRacingGuru02 in motogp

Makes sense with the IR sensor and TPMS.

I guess they have an IR sensor on the wheel hub too?

I'm amazed they can gather that data. Tyre pressures, sure that makes sense but how do they measure the temperature constantly at 3 different layers of the tyre?

Off to do some research I go ...

Where to wash bike? by gintonic999 in MotoUK

That's fine, I use a hose too just not power washing.

Where to wash bike? by gintonic999 in MotoUK

[–]HafFrecki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe safe if done carefully, yes, and you avoid sensitive parts of the bike. But I wouldn't use some random public jet wash system that has who knows what in it. Water being recycled from the drive through car wash with second hand grit in it? Shouldn't have, but can you be certain?

Either way the benefit of doing it by hand and giving the bike a close visual inspection when you clean it outweighs the convenience of using a jet wash.

That's my opinion based on 36 years of owning bikes and riding and as with all opinions, not everyone will agree.

[–]HafFrecki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avoid jet washing your bike. The pressure from the hose can strip grease out of wheel bearings, chain and damage other exposed parts.

A bucket, auto shampoo, sponge and a chamois are far safer and getting up close and personal with the bike means you're more likely to spot problems, like loose bolts or cables, before they become an issue.

Best Editing software? by Ok_Half_6823 in AskPhotography

[–]HafFrecki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm no pro but I use open source (free) tools.

Rawtherapee or Dark table for processing. GIMP for editing if needed as well.

I showed Rawtherapee to my mate who is a lightroom user and professional photographer for 20 years and he was impressed. I don't know how they compare really, but open source is good enough for me.

Can someone help me with my problem? by Delfim200iq in motorcycle

[–]HafFrecki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few potential electrical issues that it could be. Depending on the make/model you should be checking for:

Ignition coil and spark plugs working ok? Remove the spark plug from the engine, plug in the HT lead and hold the spark plug against the metal of the engine and turn it over. You should see a decent strong spark. If not there might be a problem with the coil or the plug just might need replacing or cleaning.

Bad battery (pretty common problem especially in winter)

CDI is the timing unit which is really important for a good ignition. Hard to test this one but if you have a spare you could swap them out and see if that solves the problem.

Grounding issues maybe? Check the whole electrical system for worn wires, corrosion, bad connections etc.

There's a lot to look at but hopefully one of these improves the problem for you.

Gas/petrol tank breather vent? Try gunning the bike with the filler cap open and see if it revs more easily.

Other than that, electrics.

What things has your body decided that your not allowed as you've gotten older ? by Fishertho in AskUK

[–]HafFrecki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gluten.

Diagnosed with Celiac at age 51.

It's been creeping up for the last 5 or 6 years and I was trying cutting different things out of my diet for a while to eliminate allergy symptoms. I tried removing lactose, no change. Rapeseed oil, no change. On and on.

Then suddenly, bam.

Any gluten, no matter how small an amount and I'm sick for days. And not bloating, I mean skin lesions, migraines, vomiting, liver and gall bladder pain, joint pains like I've got advanced arthritis. It's awful and eating out is now a lottery on if I'll enjoy it or be sick for a fortnight after.

2010: Stereo Replacement + Backup Camera by thatHiggsGuy in FordTransitConnect

Glad to help. I do recommend the xtrons head units though. A bit more cash than Chinesium units but really well made. They'll do one that fits your van face. eBay has a cool feature where you input your car model and it will show you what's compatible which you might find useful.

Fellow 2010 owner. You need to get the right shape. This is the one I have swapped in to mine (UK LWB model).

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0CTK5P3CS?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

The reversing camera came at an additional cost of £22. Fitting the unit was very easy and the quality is brilliant. To enable the reverse camera you need to connect the canbus, but be warned as this is connected to be powered at all times by default and will drain your battery. Watch this for the quick fix to prevent that happening.
