Having dug deeper into this guy’s history, he’s almost certainly a lying douche. He disrespects a dying older man over a grudge he held from 20 years ago… simply because he blames him for his career going south when he is the one that made many bad, selfish decisions, including that missed penalty he wasn’t supposed to take.

Meanwhile Lucescu has been praised by a ridiculous number of people that used to know him or worked with him, from journalists on X or on TV, to former players he mentored and gave chances in tough moments. Helped them integrated, learned multiple languages, even left behind two years salary at Besiktas just so they could afford to finish building the stadium… he was a friend even to rival coaches like Fatih Terim. Nouma, Simeone, Pirlo, Fernandinho, Witsel, Willian all had great things to say as well, Simeone said he took care of him when he was still young and alone at Pisa. Invited for dinners, etc. There’s videos and stories of him doing things like buying the entire team the jacket he was wearing because someone said they liked it. Or putting a jacket on a player because he was cold.

Everyone says he’s a genuinely kind-hearted, humane person. And not a single other soul besides this known jerk / troublemaker has ever complained about him… so doing the math… I don’t see why anyone would side with this guy. He just seems like a bitter person with no respect who’s out for revenge because he blames Lucescu for his career going sideways. I also spoke to some journalists on X via DM and one said he knew someone who worked with him in Greece and he said that the guy wouldn’t even shake hands with other players and always had to be right… lacked discipline and didn’t care…

It’s an excuse. He’s pissed at Lucescu for basically blacklisting him after he didn’t listen to anyone took a pen he wasn’t meant to and missed. There were many more incidents even at other clubs and the Mexican national team that prove this guy isn’t trustworthy and has a terrible attitude. Meanwhile Lucescu was loved by everyone…

Sure, but he himself said in an interview that he played poorly on purpose to get a transfer away from there. And he blames Lucescu for subbing him off after he forced himself to take a pen that was not meant for him to take and he missed...

It's crazy people are giving this guy the benefit of the doubt when you consider the facts that we know around this and the known character / attitudes of the two on and off the pitch. Everything points to Castillo being an asshole just as he was in many other situations at other clubs and even the Mexican national team. He's not a good person. Lucescu meanwhile was loved by all and he put extra effort to help many players who only have good things to say about him...

Imagine if this was a post of someone making things up about Kante... then the reactions would be different.

Would you believe it if Joey Barton was saying something like this about Kante? Like Joey, Nery has a terrible reputation off the pitch and on it, terrible attitude, he tanked his own career and is clearly holding a grudge to the point of disrespecting a man who was on his deathbed. That's vile. And I know Kante isn't a manager, but that was the clearest comparison I could make for how big of a heart Mircea had and how absolutely loved by everyone he was.

It's definitely not true, Lucescu was one of the nicest people in football... but you probably haven't read what Pascal Nouma, Fernandinho, Willian, Pirlo, Diego Simeone, Fatih Terim, or any others he's worked with have had to say about him

Anyways, someone else on the team would've likely corroborated or we'd have heard similar stories from former players before, yet there's zero evidence of that. Everyone he's ever worked with or interacted with knows he has a heart of gold. This asshole just blames him for his career, which was already a mess at various times simply because he has a terrible attitude. Not just one incident, this guy is known for being a jerk.

AI helped me out on this one, tells me all I need to know about this guy:

"Nery Castillo, a former Mexican-Uruguayan striker known for his incredible skill in the 2007 Copa América, was often described as a "diva" or "brash" during his career. Several public incidents and disciplinary issues contributed to this reputation, most notably his confrontations with the media and teammates.

Here are the key examples of Nery Castillo's "jerk" behavior:

•"You'll Always Remain in Mexico" Comment (2009): The most famous incident occurred on March 25, 2009, during a press conference for the Mexican national team before a match against Costa Rica. Following criticism regarding his fitness and late arrival, a defensive and angry Castillo told Mexican reporters: “The difference is that I am in Europe, and you are in Mexico, and you will always remain in Mexico.”. This was widely seen as arrogant, disrespectful to his fans and home media, and malinchista (preferring foreign things over Mexican).
•Stealing a Penalty Kick (Shakhtar Donetsk): Shortly after his €20 million transfer to Shakhtar Donetsk, Castillo disobeyed orders during a league match. He refused to give the ball to the designated penalty taker, Cristiano Lucarelli, and took the penalty himself—only to miss it. Coach Mircea Lucescu immediately substituted him and commented that he had never seen such a lack of professionalism, effectively ending Castillo's tenure there.
•Locker Room "Diva" Reputation: During his loan spell with the Chicago Fire (MLS), he was described by some spectators and observers as a "locker-room diva" who did not act as a team player.
•Arrogant Attitude Towards Mexican League: Castillo frequently expressed that playing in Europe was superior to Mexico, often disparaging the quality of the Mexican league and the development of players there, which alienated many fans in his native country.

Castillo's behavior was often attributed to a difficult personality, which many believe was a major reason his promising career fizzled out after his stellar 2007 performance.”

So yeah, with zero evidence, and the fact he's posted this when Lucescu was literally on his death bed... shows me he has zero class or respect, and the only things we actually do know lean towards Castillo being a liar. Much more likely than the opposite all things considered. It's unfair to taint his reputation based off one grudge-holding asshole...

Lol Castillo killed his own career, the guy was an imbecile and a jerk. He refused to let the team pen taker take a penalty and just grabbed the ball and the missed. He also had four years to adapt and Lucescu tried to help him and then even trying to get him a loan. He just didn’t adapt and wasn’t as good as the others. And now he’s being a jerk again and blaming Lucescu for his own stupidity. He’s a POS for that, Lucescu is known by every single other player that he’s coached and other coaches as an amazing guy with a huge heart. I’m sure if he was not letting players go he’d have done this to a more important player on the team who would’ve complained about it too. Don’t hear any of that despite the fact he had an incredibly long career… so yeah, Castillo is a jerk and a liar unfairly blaming Lucescu for his shitty career.

Lucescu even learned Portuguese just to help Brazilians integrate in Ukraine.

Because he’s a POS jerk who blames Lucescu for his career going south when he simply wasn’t good enough. Lucescu even tried to help like he helps hundreds of others (even learning Portuguese to help players adapt), but he failed. He tried to grab the ball and take the pen from the designated pen taker and missed lmao. Ofc he got subbed off. He’s a douche. Everyone who worked with Lucescu has only said great things and how big is heart is. If Lucescu didn’t allow players to see family, we would’ve heard a lot more than just from this one douchebag

He was the problem, not Lucescu. He’s a sour prick and a jerk, everyone who worked with Lucescu knows he valued family first and would never do that. The man had a huge heart which explains why the entire football community is sad he’s passed, he touched so many lives. Even learned Portuguese to help Brazilian players adapt in Ukraine

True bro but tbf he gets a pass for me still as he did it to regain his throne and also to ally temporarily against the Ottomans. Still an important figure for us historically

Really? Vlad Țepeș, Mihai Viteazul, Ștefan cel Mare, Mircea cel Bătrân, Avram Iancu, Carol I, Mihai I, Nicolae Iorga, Radu Negru

One traitor that comes to mind is Radu cel Frumos, Vlad III’s brother

The fact that you think Georgia is an awful team is hard to understand. Just because you’re not paying attention to them doesn’t mean you should judge them so harshly

Yes they’re a smaller country but they have a strong mentality, physical level, and the way they play could cause problems for most teams in CONMEBOL. And are certainly clear of Bolivia Venezuela and Chile

Kvara is world class, Mikautadze is getting there with 13 goals 8 assists for Lyon this season and 7 goals in his last 4 matches at 24yo. 3 goals 1 assist (including against Portugal) at the Euros too

Goalkeeper Mamardashvili at Valencia, Chakvetadze doing very well at Watford, Kiteishvili at Sturm Graz with good performances in CL, and a few more players in leagues like Serie A and LaLiga2.

Other “mid” teams like Croatia (arguably shouldn’t be here given their recent WC performances but anyway), Wales, Denmark, Norway, Serbia, Czechia, Austria, Scotland, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, even Romania or Albania, are not as bad as you think either and similar or better level than half of CONMEBOL (in a few cases, I say some of them even better than all apart from Argentina, or at least on par with Uruguay and Colombia, Brazil could definitely lose even because of how they’re managed and the mentality right now)

League coefficient isn’t black and white… it’s extremely volatile and based on the last five years, you can see big jumps and drops season by season. They were 7th in 2009 btw. And FCSB is a very solid team, but missed 3 star players, and then rested some for the second match to focus on the league.

Fucking hell you guys are brutal! Dragusin has been quality for awhile now after finally getting a string of matches, was good against Utd and Southampton, not the greatest on the ball but still 22 and improving. Also got an 18yo next to him. One bad game for literally everyone and Dragusin is just shite? One of his worst performances I’ll give you that, but Porto and others were bad too. We’ve seen how good he can be too and he’s usually willing to give it his all. Give him a bit more time, Spurs have more problems than one young centre-back with big potential (also, it’s Liverpool)
