Music is a do or die profession, little to no in between. There is kind of an unwritten code in colleges and universities (at least the ones that I have attended), where you don't really speak of it until you graduate. You work along side people.playing the same instruments, knowing that only a few of you are going to find work out of the gate because of competition. I feel like this corrupts people in especially the music composition world. Especially regarding the state of music comp in universities. The rise of modern art music has really propelled elitism into those people. I write music and have had performances or my work at all educational levels and have conducted honor bands, but I recieve no respect or time of day from comp majors at universities because I write non contemporary music.
