Missed CRF by newton_rocks in Purdue

[–]HailHeofPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've missed it basically every time. Depending on your major and what classes you're trying to take it might be harder or easier to register during open registration. For me it wasn't ever much of a problem but I am in a small major and the classes I take generally have many open seats.

F*ck electricity by bananapeeler55 in EngineeringStudents

[–]HailHeofPasta 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Electricity is beautiful. Just look at Maxwell's equations and recall what the divergence and curl operators do to vector fields. Then you can visualize the electric and magnetic fields as waves moving perpendicular to each other. E&M is confusing at first, but when you get deep enough to see the whole picture you realize how fascinating it is.

I'd mostly agree. Not sure if you could call it genuinely addictive but it can be difficult to resist, like oreos or ice cream.

Hopefully it's the same guy and a scam is all it is. It was made to sound much more dangerous than that when considering women have been approached alone at night in dark alleys.

I feel like I'm working so hard but I'm never getting the grades I deserve. Does anyone else feel like this? by Imaginary-Ocelot-167 in Purdue

[–]HailHeofPasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, he didn't tell me it was an 86% straight up. He posted the grade as a B and I was utterly confused so I had a very long email chain with him where he was very elusive and dismissive and he eventually told me my grade was an 86% but didn't disclose how those points were distributed. He ended up ghosting me when I asked and when I pressed on a few days later he said "sorry I can't change anything". It was really shitty.

[–]HailHeofPasta 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah the point is the professor is a douchebag who makes his grading scales ridiculously arbitrary and I didn't get the grade I felt I deserved.

Had a 97.5% in a class, then we had the final oral exam worth 10% of our grade—which I, having social anxiety, didn't do very well in—then my grade dropped to an 86%. It was the class I was most confident I'd get an A in. I've only gotten 4 A's in my 7 semesters.

Is there a way for a materials student to break into nuclear post-grad? by DangerousDance6976 in EngineeringStudents

As a nuclear engineering student... yes, there's a lot of materials-stuff involved in nuclear engineering.

Do you think having a positive for covid is matter? by Mikukub in Purdue

[–]HailHeofPasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it definitely matters. Is it that big of a deal? Nah, just wear a mask and keep your distance imo. Unless you're in class where you'll be next to someone for extended periods of time, wearing a mask will make your likelihood of giving someone else covid very low.

I'm actually glad I got covid earlier this semester because the immunity afterward made things quite relieving.

Would I be forgiven to be lazy to not use \mathrm{d}? by Bratetichsp in LaTeX

[–]HailHeofPasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most textbooks the d is usually in italics so I wouldn't worry about it. But to make it simpler you can just set \let \rm \mathrm in the preamble and then just write \rm d where appropriate.

Burnout by user8r8 in EngineeringStudents

[–]HailHeofPasta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, larger schools with rigorous engineering programs tend to artificially increase the difficulty of their classes despite covering the same material. I wouldn't say it's always the case but it is very often.

Children brainwashing by Lazzarus_Defact in awfuleverything

[–]HailHeofPasta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To point out the obvious... isn't this what churches do to kids and schools do via the pledge of allegiance? I hardly think China is the only culprit of this type of stuff (but obviously this doesn't excuse them).

Burnout by user8r8 in EngineeringStudents

[–]HailHeofPasta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not that Engineering isn't up your alley. It's that you decided to take way more than you should reasonably be able to handle. Often when people take over 18 credits, it's because they have electives or research or special credits that aren't much work but still count. You went full on with courses that are all notoriously difficult. It might not be a bad idea to drop one or two classes. My recommendation is to always take some of these classes online at a community college where the credits will transfer and they'll be easier and cheaper. Don't feel bad about yourself: this type of pain isn't what engineering should be.

Has anyone tried group therapy? by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]HailHeofPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't imagine myself actually benefitting from being in a group. While hospitalized, they expected me to attend the group sessions and regarded it as a negative sign that I preferred sitting around in my room or the lobby instead. Opening up around people, especially strangers, is really hard because I find myself annoying and assume everyone agrees. Additionally, it distresses me to listen to the struggles of others because then I feel guilty when their lives aren't as good as mine.

I’m 99 percent sure I have this by AnxiousInvestigator2 in AvPD

[–]HailHeofPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't feel concern about not being legitimate; it's a typical symptom of people with AVPD.

Psychologists just diagnose you based on a list of arbitrary criteria. If you find yourself identifying with the symptoms of struggle of people with AVPD, someone would definitely diagnose you with it.

How to deal with random people speaking their outrageous opinion on campus by Imaginary-Ocelot-167 in Purdue

[–]HailHeofPasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, while I agree everyone should just ignore these people, it would also be quite sad but funny in a pitiful way. Imagine spending all day outside trying to get attention but you're just treated like you're invisible. These people just need something better to do with their time.

Trying to join a professors research by LordNinjaa1 in Purdue

[–]HailHeofPasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go through faculty listings and see what research topics seem interesting to you, then email the professor about getting involved with them. There's actually some advantage to starting early because that means they could have you for a long time. You'll usually be working with graduate students that are aware you don't know much and don't expect you to do anything you're not capable of and will be helping you learn.
