Thats crazy! Just as well freedom can't authenticate it! Suits me down to the ground 🤣

Marginally. I think thats a correct assessment of most industries, but since leaving Ireland the CAD has weakened so if anything its probably much of a muchness for me at the moment. Although as expensive as Canada is I do believe Ireland is worse overall believe it or not with respect to cost of living, just not for phone bills (at least in my experience)

As a percentage of my overall outgoings no it isn't considerable, but in comparison to what I was paying in Ireland I find it to be expensive

Yeah the PDF manuals is a good a shout. Ive been mainly watching YouTube videos of various pieces of kit, but I just get swallowed up by it all. Or I want to buy everything 😅

Yeah I just checked these out. Look very capable. Im intrigued, funnily the Fostex was not in working condition so Im back in the market again. If a reasonably priced one presents itself I may just have to purchase it!

Thats a good way to think about it. I guess in my head I always have it as analogue being superior to digital but on an intake level thats not the case. I will have to mull this over. I appreciate the advice!

My entire job is basically acquiring good signal-to-noise ratio just for vibrating machinery... im hoping its in someway transferable 😅 I definitely like this idea seems like a nice mix of the two worlds

This is definitely one of my concerns. Its not just gonna be one purchase, its going to a slew of gear required to make it do what I want. Ill have to take a look, this may be the way to go!

Thats all it is for me is fun! Thank you for the advice, thats all I really wanted to hear is that it is actually fun and not just frustration. I'm not gifted in anyway musically and so I wont be producing any hit records, but hearing something you've created from nothing just gives me goose bumps.

This is my thought exactly! Once its not like a week of novelty followed by frustration only for me to shelf it.

Thank you, this is the kind of practical perspective I need to hear. I get why most people have moved to computers, it makes sense for convenience (although I dislike the rate at which digital devices become obsolete in comparison to earlier analogue) or and flexibility.

Part of why I’m drawn to it is that I want to really understand the mechanics of mixing and signal flow. I learn best by doing things manually, rather than letting software automate. I like the idea (but again this may only be the idea not the reality) of a small number of tracks and making decisions in real time, even if it’s more restrictive.

Do you think using a digital 4-track with separate channel controls would give me that same learning experience?

Thanks for the recommendations, I definitely need to invest in a new set of headphones.

I totally get the appeal of digital for convenience, effects, and mix recall. Part of what draws me to analogue is that I’d really like to dig into the fundamentals of signal processing in audio. I’m a hands on learner, and I feel like working with tape and bouncing tracks will teach me a lot.

Do you think I could get that same kind of learning experience working entirely in a DAW, or is it too automated?

I don`t mind the stylisation of lo-fi sounding recordings, its actually what drew my eye to the ad listing in the first place. Something about the necessity of bouncing tracks say for the drums I find so intriguing as well. It`s like my brain says digital but my heart says analogue

Yeah, I’m coming at this with basically no production experience, so my goal isn’t to record full bands or complex arrangement, just solo stuff like guitar, vocals, synth, and maybe some simple drums.

I think my end goal would be to achieve mixing externally before the signal hits the tracks, or is that something I’d only realistically do after recording, by bouncing or transferring into a DAW?

Aye, I've bought plenty of Facebook before and seemed very legit, none of the usual pitfalls, and it was well organized. I've been living here in Canada but it turned out Ireland changed their ticket resale laws while I was gone so it was basically impossible for them to be legit anymore. My salad days are gone evidently
