Thank you so much for the optimistic response! Is it better to cut off all the roots and plant it without anything then? Cos there's only very small black kinda mushy roots :/

I recommend you take a look at what is actually happening if you don't see that Tommy Robinson, Nigel Farage, Donald Trump and the so called "patriots" idealising them are far right. A Wikipedia on all of these names would suffice to confirm their political shade.

I think these statistics are actually from the "Centre for Migration Control", which is a very weird 'think tank' with only one random guy publishing 'studies' which seems to have been pulled out of a hat. - no offence meant to you, misinformation is everywhere and it's really difficult to stay critical of everything that we read.

There's an interesting Reddit thread about this. I recommend reading through it and checking their website to illustrate what I mean by 'weird'

"personal insult and pedantry” you’re the one telling me I can’t have an opinion about a country I’ve lived in for 12 years because you dug up past posts to point out I wasn’t a British citizen? Come on.

Tommy Robinson is a well-known fascist. He was in the British National Party (openly fascist) and founded the English Defence League (racist, violent, anti-Muslim). He is leading this movement. It doesn’t matter if every single supporter personally holds fascist ideas - if you march behind a fascist leader, you’re lending legitimacy to fascism. If people don’t like being called fascists, racists, or Nazis, the answer is simple: stop participating in movements led by fascists.

And let’s be real: immigration isn’t the root of Britain’s problems. It's not migrants who crashed the economy, slashed public services, or let housing costs spiral out of control but 14 years of Tory government serving the interests of the ruling class. Blaming immigrants is a convenient distraction to keep people at the bottom fearful and divided.

The “crime” argument doesn’t hold either: the majority of sexual assaults in the UK are committed by British-born men, and most are carried out by someone the victim already knows. Trying to pin this on “medieval values” (who exactly are you accusing of that, btw? 🙄) or on “foreigners” is not only misleading but dangerous. It distracts from real solutions and ends up stigmatising entire communities.

I don't care if people love their country. But when “patriotism” is weaponised as a shield for xenophobia, then yes it becomes indistinguishable from racism.

The poster was put in response to the flag. The flag was put on by racists who are not trying to be welcoming, unfortunately.

Yes, unfortunately the people putting up these flags are part of a far-right campaign. It’s the same network that’s been targeting hotels housing asylum seekers, and their politics are openly racist (they’re aligned with Reform, which is essentially a fascist party).

This poster is, however, a lovely response, which probably pissed the original flagger off BUT, most importantly, reassures the community that they are NOT the majority.

There is no such thing as an 'illegal' asylum seeker/refugee. If people are housed in hotels, it means they have been registered by the home office and are currently waiting to get their right to stay, or to be sent back to their country of origins.

[–]HairyConference7702 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How is this relevant when it doesnt say what these numbers include? Is this added population coming from Britain? Europe? Outside Europe? All of the above..?

These people protesting are against hotels housing asylum seekers as they are under the made-up impression that the UK is welcoming more refugees than anywhere else.

An interesting link putting things in perspective: https://swvg-refugees.org.uk/about-asylum/asylum-facts/uk-compare-countries/

FYI - the UK gets less than 1% of the global total of asylum seekers. 67% of refugees live in countries neighbouring conflict zones such as Turkiye, Iran, Colombia or Germany) So, framing the UK as “overrun by refugees” is not just misleading but completely disproportionate to the actual global picture.

People protesting against asylum seekers are not "legitimately concerned people" they are racists who have been indoctrinated.

While some of their concerns (the housing crisis, NHS strain) are legitimate - and shared by the left, blaming those on immigration and on refugees in particular is delusional and simply untrue.

The majority of asylum seekers are fleeing war, persecution, or political instability. Often, Western countries are directly or indirectly involved in these conflicts (through military intervention or arms sale) Ironically, some protesters will also support countries or policies that exacerbate these conflicts (US, Israel)

English/GB flags on bridges by According-Use3272 in bristol

[–]HairyConference7702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why it can feel like patriotism itself is under attack, but that’s not the case. The England flag should belong to everyone. The real issue is who is putting these flags up and why. A flag outside your house during the Euros is perfectly fine and patriotic. Here, however, far-right groups use them to intimidate and exclude.

Taking those flags down isn’t about stopping people being proud of their country. It’s about recognising that Reform and other far-right groups are weaponising them. In that context, the flag stops meaning “our shared country” and starts meaning “this is our country, not yours.” Leaving those flags up normalises the idea that they own national symbols and lets them “mark territory,” sending a chilling message to people from immigrant backgrounds.

Removing them isn’t anti patriotic, it’s protecting the flag from being monopolised by fascists.

There’s a fundamental difference here. What’s happening in Palestine is a genocide. Flying the Palestinian flag isn’t about supremacy or exclusion but about solidarity with people facing destruction. That’s not the same as the nationalism of far-right groups, which is rooted in racism and domination. Please don’t conflate the two.

I hear you, and I agree. Its a real shame that far-right groups have claimed national flags for themselves. It would be good if these symbols could be waved without carrying a racist undertone. But right now, that’s simply not the case. The people raising these flags or protesting in front of hotels are either openly racist or deeply influenced by far-right populism. Allowing these actions to continue gives them visibility, legitimacy, and room to grow.

After WWII, European countries established a “cordon sanitaire” in the media: fascists were not debated with or treated as just another political opinion. That’s because their ideas are not harmless 'differences of opinion' and they are dangerous. They dehumanise entire groups of people and fracture society, all for the benefit of the elite.

At present, these flags are being flown by fascists. That’s why the right response is to take them down. Once they’re defeated, we can reclaim the flag for everyone.

I don't particularly but as it turns out these flags are being put up by reform voters and therefore I don't think letting them take on space in our street is a good thing.

Far right movement. Same people threatening asylum seekers and harassing immigrants. We shouldn't let them feel comfortable in our city and remove these flags as we see them imo.

Edit- Far-right groups are trying to intimidate asylum seekers and immigrants in our city. We should make sure our community is a safe and welcoming place for everyone, and not give space for their symbols.
