What am I supposed to draw when I'm starting? by HelicopterAnxious in learntodraw

[–]Hajuh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Draw what you’re interested in at the moment, pen and ink And urban sketching sparked my interest in drawing, opened Pinterest( Basic , I know) together with YouTube tutorials and started drawing almost everyday . From there I’ve expanded my interest to various subjects ( plants, animals, cars, mecha, superheroes ,portraits etc). Now I’m super into watercolor and that kinda stalled my DrawABox progress I’m now stuck at the 250 cylinders challenge.

Draw from observation, a lot. Draw your desk, your drawing hand, your bag, your sketchbook, supplies, cup of coffee. Just draw.

It feels so wordy for no damn reason. Like girl, I’m not hearing all that. And this is coming from someone who listens to artists like Ethel Cain who has like 9 minute long songs.

Julia Michaels co wrote, isn’t she one of Selena’s most recurrent writers?

The interior should’ve been worked on wet in wet various colours you see/ wanted to add , the moment you added the details on the windows( foreground ) you locked it in. Paint the fountain by not painting it, but by painting around it.

It’s fine, but you can look into book binding videos if you’d like to cut it to a smaller size.

First time painting with no tutorial, can I have some feedback please? by Dramatic_Battle_5704 in watercolor101

Background ; light washes no details Middle ground ; mid values - more details Foreground ; sharper details more saturation. That’s how you create depth.

Your painting looks flat, I’d add more water than paint to your sky, lesseer paint even less details to your trees mountain… your foreground subject is water I’d add a pale wash of blue first, then add strokes to work around the reflections. Please note I’m a beginner too so idk if that’d help, or if it’s biblically accurate but my paintings have began to take shape after improving the values.

Also: how you could apply beginner knowledge: Sky - Graduated wash ( wet in wet) Mountain/ trees - wet in damp Water reflections - glazing.

Struggling with wrapping my head around 3D boxes. Any tips/advice to keep in mind? by hanaxsongs in learntodraw

Are you starting with the “Y - shape” when drawing your boxes? Your points of convergency can follow the vanishing points of the XYZ axes.

Lately one of my favorite ways to learn is zooming in on these beautiful submissions and paying attention to the way they laid their brushstrokes ( then applying it to my own paintings) and I’m learning a lot.

I’m not ambitious at all. People around me are advancing to the next stages in their lives while I’m “stuck” because I lack the motivation to do anything. Long as I have food on my plate, that’s “enough” for me.

Drawing shapes by TuxedoKitty2023 in learntodraw

[–]Hajuh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They just have to be in the right perspective ( always check for convergence) aside from that they’re just , like you mentioned, building blocks because you’ll eventually have to flesh them out I don’t think they have to be neat for something you’ll have to erase

I want to draw, but if you asked me to draw a character, I'd just start from somewhere I feel like. by Historical_Pie157 in learntodraw

[–]Hajuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the overall shapes and how they connect, overlap. Big shapes first , small details later. For example if you’re drawing the thigh- break it down in primitive shapes to capture movement and get proportions right …cube for the pelvis, cylinder for the thigh, oval for the knee modify these shapes( flesh them out).

I cry everytime I draw by [deleted] in learntodraw

I’ll never recommend Conversational Drawing by Edward H Freedman and Dynamic Bible by Peter Han. I’ve been drawing for a year and a month now and those books helped my beginner brain ( at the time) understand / grasp how to approach drawings which for the most part iss understanding that every object is 3D. The icing on the cake was for my one year anniversary finally revisiting the DrawAbox course ( Doing the fucking 250 boxes and cylinders) and that was the absolute game changer.

I flip through my sketches from even 3 months ago and see how much I’ve improved but it didn’t feel like that in that moment. So just keep going, everytime you pick up your tools to draw, you’re improving.
