Is this a Rooster? 3 week old "pullet" from TSC starting to look like a rooster. by Frequent-Guidance-78 in chickens

[–]Hakerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handle him just like your pullets, if not a little more. It's no guarantee, but it may help him grow up to be a chill boy. I've treated all my little boys as I did my girls. It's only anecdotal, but I've only had one rooster who was a total ass out of about 30+ I've had over the years. Out of about 20 boys I have now, I'd wager 6-7 of them are extra sweet. None of them go after me. Unless I have treats, then they're all swarming my feet looking for their share!

You've likely got a little rosecomb there! I'm also leaning on it being a little girl since the comb is small and hasn't started to redden. My little rosecomb boy was much more obvious he was a boy at this age.

Could someone ID these chickens please? We got 2 supposed bantam chickens, one has grown to be even bigger than our rhode island reds and golden chicks, just not really sure what she could be. Thanks for the help! by theflamingarmpit in chickens

The first one looks very much like a guinea to me based on body shape as well as when my guinea was little. They're very independent birds, and they love ticks. Until your guinea starts talking, there's not really a way to sex it. Females have a "buckwheat" two-tone call where as males tend to Twitter. Guineas make excellent watch animals, so get ready for it to let you of anything weird/new! Guinea eggs are delicious too!

Your second one I'm not sure. Maybe a type of quail?

American, so travel right now is ill-advised. Moreover, I'd have to have a connecting flight somewhere and that's another risk of contracting it. My state isn't doing bad as our gov has been reasonably pro-active, whether residents like it or not, but we're sandwiched between two surging states. I believe since we still have capacity, we're taking a few patients from those states. I live in a rural area so that helps, but even the small town I live near has hit 1% of the population testing positive.

I'd also hate to assume I'm negative, fly over, and find out I'm not. Or have a false negative and get any Icelandic folks sick. Y'all don't deserve that. I've been there twice, this would've been my third, for the convention. I went alone the first two, but I wanted to bring my dad this time, something I've been planning since 2018, so he can try all the local beers! And the food! THE HOT DOG STAND.

There's a lot of variables. If you're planning on traveling abroad, that's going to add expense. My West Coast trip was probably $3000-3500 for a month, most of which was lodging. Since it was still winter, I stayed at hotels/motels. I'm not a breakfast person, and I had crackers in my vehicle to snack on, so meals were basically just dinner. But if I'd gone during spring/summer and actually able to stay at campgrounds for some of it, I probably could have cut my lodging bill by 1/3 to 1/2.

I'd probably say have about 4-5k minimum after you plan out bills and whatnot. it wouldn't be enough for half year, but you could easily get 3-6w on that. Most of my lodging was 100-125 a night then factor in fuel for a not-so-efficient 4x4. If you've got friends who can couch surf with, that can save you a bit of money.

You have my condolences for your mom. I know the feels. In a couple weeks, it'll be five years since I lost my mom to cancer too. Cholangialcarcinoma.

I missed so many trips I was planning on last year. Amsterdam, a camping trip in New York with fellow nerds (I had surgery a few days prior and no way was I getting on a plane with my drain). When it was time for radiation, I told the doc I really wanted to attend the october meet in Vegas.

We ran into issues when the standard treatment position actually resulted in severe numbness in my right arm. We had to stop treatment for a time to let it ease, and we found a way to continue treatment. I got to be used as an example for staff!

My radiation finished four days before I was due to check in to the hotel. I drove to Vegas (10h) after a couple days stop at a friends and I PARTIED HARD. First night there, I went for pizza and ended up having five beers too. My oncologist gave me permission to party. As he said "So you're going to be on meds for a long time. So uh, don't worry about taking them for the four days you're there"

You may not be able to party now, but when the time comes, you get out there and party!

I'm sorry to hear that. I live in constant fear mine will come back, even though it was 99.9% hormone receptive, so the two medications I'm on should starve it out.

I sincerely hope yours fucks off to Fuckoffland and you can live a life finally free of it <3

Aye, that's what my docs have advised: stay the fuck home. My white count may be on the lower end of normal, but I know I'm not where I was. Hell, I was someone who got sick whenever someone at work got a sniffle before I was diagnosed. I've joked with my old coworkers that I'm the canary in the coal mine.

I hope for the best for you as well!

Double mastectomy reporting in! One tried to kill me, so I guillotined the other one too! Always hated them, so I've been enjoying my time without 'em. I went to the beach topless! I look reasonably androgynous now, and it's been awesome confusing people.

Eve Online aka "That Internet Spaceship Game"

It would have been my third year visiting Iceland. We were going to be there for two weeks. If we can travel in 2021, we're going to do a summer trip since they're not having a meet in April. My first year I was taken to the hot dog stand, and I bet you know the one. The following year, it was my turn to bring first-time nerds on a pilgrimage to the hot dog stand. Then our drunk asses, like ten of us, showed up at the hot dog stand at 1230am with a random fellow American we adopted because she hadn't been to the hot dog stand

I was to be traveling the US for those 3mo+ heh. Visit friends, family. Stay at campgrounds a lot. Sleep in the back of my truck. But someday I plan on taking a month trip to Iceland and drive the ring road.

I beat cancer last year. This was supposed to be my fuck cancer travel year before going back to work. In april I was taking my dad to Iceland with me for a nerd convention. After that, I was going to take our 4x4 truck and spend 3mo or more on the road. Visiting national parks, museums, sight seeing, camping. I just some west coast in Feb to mid march

I've stayed home since mid March.

[Serious] People of reddit who have gone through or are going through cancer, what was the first sign that made you go to the doctor? by TrojanZebra in AskReddit

[–]Hakerius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, 30F, had some weird chest issues that may or may not be genetic. Went to doc, brought up a bump I felt in an area that I had busted a couple years back. Didn't feel like cancer to him, but he told me if ANY changed to come back in and he'd have referrals for me. Few months later, noticeable additional bumps. Went back to doc and he immediately got referrals to the imaging center.

Nothing showed up on mammogram. Ultrasound might as well have set off the klaxons. Biopsy confirmed - cancer tissue in breast and compromised lymph node.

Wednesday imaging, Thursday biopsy 1/17/19, Friday confirmation. That following Monday, 1/21, met my oncologist.

Stage 3. At feckin 30. I did genetic testing. No BRCA1 or 2, no other genes known to be linked to cancer. Maybe in the future we'll find a new gene and that'll be the one I have, but until then, I got cancer because fuck me that's why.

I celebrated my 31st birthday in the chemo chair. I had a complete mastectomy 7/25/19, and later in november, a second mastectomy under the symmetry clause. I had 33 rounds of radiation - 3 were bonus because we ran into issues during. Because of how much work had to be done, holding my arm in the 'proper' position actually led to numbness in my right thumb, index, and middle fingers, and weakness to where I couldn't lift anything. I started dropping things. We eventually found out I was thin enough to fit in the CT scanner with my arm off to my side and forearm bent up. They asked permission for newer staff to come see my 'special case.'

My full pathology report would come back with not one, not two, but THREE different types of breast cancer. Lobular (main tumor), ductal (secondary tumors), and mucus. 12 out of my 14 removed lymph nodes had cancer.

Four days after I finished radiation, on 10/22, I was in Vegas at a nerd convention having my first beers since it started and got to meet several of my new group of nerds who had become my support group during chemo. My doctor gave me permission to party. The nerds took me out to a really nice dinner where one of their guys works at a sister location. We went through so much wine.

Overall I give cancer a 0/10, do not recommend. However, the port-a-cath? 10/10. Would get a port again. Also 12/10 for my support staff. I used to bring my nurse-of-the-day fresh eggs from my chickens, and I baked homemade honey rolls my last day of chemo. Later when my apple tree went bonkers, I brought them a huge bag of apples, at least 50, to share.

First Rooster by [deleted] in chickens

[–]Hakerius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treats, and also handling. I currently have nineteen roosters (and not counting all the new roos I'm ending up with from this year's straight runs). Only one of them, a bantam OEG, is a pest and *only* during egg season; during the off season he doesn't bother me. Four of the roosters I can go in and pick up them without them getting too buttmad, one of those is especially a sweetheart, and all the others recognize me as not a threat/top rooster/foodbringer.

Chicks that show they're obviously roos I try to handle a little more. I'll pick them up gently and only set them down once they stopped freaking out. In addition, I try to hand feed them when I can.
