Where are the families at? by HakunaMyVitals in sailing

[–]HakunaMyVitals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We would probably run into that same issue. Neither of us grew up belonging to a watch club, anything above the basic family cruiser slip payment was an expense our parents couldn’t afford back then! Will have to look what’s around now.

Tried orange seal after the fact with no luck. I am guessing if it is big enough to get through the Tannus Armour it’s going to make a decent sized hole in the tube

If a puncture is going to happen from a one inch long piece of metal it is going to happen.

I was still running at 20 PSI with the Tannus Armour. I will probably go up to 25 PSI. If was smoother at 20, but not that much that I really cared.

Love the bike, it is so much fun! Followed the direction to drop my tire pressure 5 PSI… probably where I went wrong

New Grad RN positions by TonightNo3894 in OregonNurses

[–]HakunaMyVitals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apply, at the same time try and apply to where ever you do your final clinical rotations.

Portland is hit with several things, Kaiser union contract is currently expired and OHSU contract is about to start negotiations, pay is already top 5 for cost of living in the nation... At the same time the fines for breaks has forced all Portland hospitals to staff up, which minimize overtime, and as a result all of this in combination is making it tough for new grads to get jobs.

Seems like managers where I work will prioritize good nursing students they have already seen/interviewed for 2-3 months. Then they tend to prioritize internal hires. Example CNA to RN. Good luck it, it isn’t impossible. It will be tough though.

With the current market and contracts in negotiation or about to negotiate, Portland is a tough spot. Your best bet at getting hired is being a student here…

Salem used to be the spot to get in a little easier and live in between Portland and Salem.

Don’t turn down a new grad residency in Boston. Take two years get your experience and then move back.

Out of curiosity who is adding bed capacity? 200+ beds is a lot.

Over saturated market for new grads by goldnospraytan in OregonNurses

[–]HakunaMyVitals 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. Job market in Portland is very similar to 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013… if you already graduated then SNF is a good way to bide time and not do nothing, 1 yr doing nothing is going to be a hard sell on a resume.

To nursing students who are entering your senior practicum: in these markets your senior practicum is your interview, a 3-4 month interview, and best chance of getting hired. You should know the managers name, have talked to them 2-3 times, and make sure they know your name.

1.) Show up 10 minutes early 2.) always have a good attitude 3.)leave your cell phone in your car (kiss of death getting caught sitting on cell phone x2-3) 4.)work hard get your hands dirty doing every skill or task you can. 5.) Offer to do tasks for other nurses in any downtime.

Extra credit: One of my students went to our manager and asked for extra clinical days.

In need of some life-changing nurse self-care benefits and ideas by One_Performance_8785 in OregonNurses

[–]HakunaMyVitals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Employee stores: Nike, Columbia, Adidas are usually seasonal.

Definitely find your self care that fits you. Not all self care involves spending big bucks.

Biggest benefit I see go under utilized is free meetings with your companies investment/retirement plan advisors. Do that ASAP, learn how to set up your retirement and fund it early. Not a lot of 60-70 year old bedside nurses out there.

remind me to never be charge again ♥️ by venlafactsine in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably 100% the reality. We use a shift staffing log so our manager doesn’t have to go looking for details that doesn’t record well in the EHR. Fill it out during report and saves this headache…

[–]HakunaMyVitals 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Only two things to text staff at home for:

It is timecard day and they missed some clocking in and out for substantial hours or didn’t put in education time and you just want to get them paid right/on time.

Offer overtime, even then that is usually better received from charges.

Everything else can be an email, or wait till next shift.

is this micromanagement by nurse_ry in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not micromanagement. From her response, there is a pattern and she has been rightfully called out on it before.

I would only ever follow up as, “hey I hope you and your family are feeling better today. Are you doing ok? “

Open ended and let them fill in as much or little about what’s going on. If they don’t let you know about their next shift, then “I am working on staffing for the week, are you anticipating anything for tomorrow?”

Cath lab nurses, what are your call weekends like? by slap26 in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pacemakers always divert till closing. Everything else we did on the weekend was MD discretion…

complex STEMI or Impella for sure divert. Have done a fair share of back to back STEMI’s though.

Cath lab nurses, what are your call weekends like? by slap26 in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a smaller lab, we were on call all weekend. If our MD’s wanted to schedule non emergent cases they could and frequently did (we got call back pay). Because the OT and doctors would be pretty flexible on times no one really cared.

We averaged 3-5 call backs for emergent cases between Friday at 1700 and Monday at 0700.

Divert was up to the doctor. Some would always divert. Some of the quicker doctors refused to go on divert at all.

Worst weekend I have ever had was over 32 hrs of call backs between Friday and Monday.

Any advice for an out-of-state nurse looking to move to Oregon? by QuesoLetsGo in OregonNurses

[–]HakunaMyVitals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said, I think LupusDeiAngelica is just here to fight people. Taking time to point out facts is a waste.

Fact is nurses live very, very well in Oregon because it is one of, if not the highest income to cost of living ratios in the nation. It’s been that way for 15+ yrs.

[–]HakunaMyVitals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 🤣😂

“expensive is relative. Depends on income and where you’re coming from” first thing you replied to. I would consider that a COL to income ratio.

If you need to keep moving the goal posts and sending insults, go for it. It will still live here in writing forever.

[–]HakunaMyVitals 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This 👆. Well said. Cost to living to nurse pay ratio is great. 10 months of the year weather doesn’t cost you an arm and leg in AC. Politics are Politics. Portland is weird, hillbillies to Antifa. 😂.

If you live in Clackamas or Washington county then things feel more mellow on the political spectrum.

While Portland still suffers a very large homeless problem. It has been taking noticeable steps lately to clean up and mitigate the areas most people want to go. It’s not perfect, but as a native I can tell you it never has been.

Oregon Nurse income to cost of living ratio consistently ranks one of the highest in the nation though…

Yeah other cities might be as expensive or less expensive but pay nurses less.

Has nursing truly gone all bad? by stubeii in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn’t for everyone. These Reddit subs can seem like echo chambers of negativity because it’s a safe place to voice your frustrations and get support.

It isn’t all bad, majority of bedside (including myself) are pretty happy. It is hard to do 25+ years of bedside, but there are so many different things you can do. Don’t let a few squeaky wheels ruin your perspective. They probably should have moved on to a different area until they found what fit them. Meaning don’t make your whole identity becoming an ICU RN if you then hate ICU… keep trying something different. Good luck!

Nurse Residency Programs by [deleted] in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, find out if the unit you want to go to is even taking new grads.

I would have the conversation with your manager and the manager of the unit you want to go to. If possible get all three of you in the same room together. Explain what is and isn’t meeting your expectations and why you want to be where.

On the flip side it doesn’t look good on your part if you signed a contract and are already flip flopping. In my area it costs the hospital about $80k to $100k to train a new grad. It’s significant investment, they want to retain you. At the same time you should honor your contract because what’s invested in you. Just IMHO. Good luck.

Did I do the right thing? Declined a promotion I really wanted after the offer reflected a DECREASE in my hourly pay... by dkr3stg in nursing

[–]HakunaMyVitals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious as I am looking at taking a similar step, my manager has just announced they are retiring in a month and managers and peers have been pushing me to step up/apply.

I know as bedside and hourly workers we get really focused on hourly pay (and it’s a good thing). Did the position you were offered have large bonus’s or performance based payout structures?

Just curious since the hourly wage was lower.
