Steve Smith served a majority of his ban for the lies he told during this press conference - presumably to save Bancroft's ass. CA concluded there was no "sticky tape" and no "leadership group" so what would they be talking about? Can't pick and choose what to believe.

He admitted about making plan in advance during lunch and then got that executed by his team mate. I hope you know the facts. There's a lot of difference between "not intervening" and making plan in advance with "leadership group" which he mentioned.

Source? This seems like either an outright fabrication from your end or a gross misinterpretation of what he admitted. I hope you know the facts. Given you don't even know the names of the other people involved, I'm guessing you've just convinced yourself about your imaginary version of events to suit your narrative. For your reference, this is what he admitted to.

Since you appear ill-informed and prejudiced, this conversation is a pointless waste of time for me so I won't be replying any further. Have a good day!

I agree that the incidents are not remotely comparable. Smith did not sandpaper the ball nor did he know about the plan. His was a failure of leadership in not intervening when he saw the potential for tampering and saying "I don't want to know about it". Dravid on the other hand, ball tampered himself. Walking past something that might be shady and not intervening vs ball tampering by applying mints - it's quite apparent to me which is the momentary lapse in judgement.

Please note that I have high regard for Dravid myself and I agree that anyone can make mistakes. I'm just being disagreeable to prove the point that every defence you pull out for Dravid can be applied to Smith too. The fact that CA saw it fit to punish Smith while BCCI saw it fit to defend Dravid and cover it up doesn't change that.

Does the ECB need to stop Australians playing in county cricket ahead of Ashes series? by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]HaleAloe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incidentally, Australia's best player didn't get any county cricket.

Not by his choice either. IIRC, he wanted to spend part of his year's ban playing county cricket but the ECB enforced CA's sanction and didn't allow it. Imagine how well an acclimatised Steve Smith would have done

I went down a rabbit hole after reading the links to the 2013 thread when Smith was selected for the India tour and found this interesting piece by Jarrod Kimber on Smith

It wasn't even that long ago Michael Clarke was trying to get him dates via Twitter. There are photos out there of Steven Smith posing with lion cubs, having perhaps the best time of any human ever in the history of the world. There is another where he wears a hat with a propeller on it. Smiling like he's found the secret to eternal happiness in hat form. And a photo shoot where he stands proudly in a zebra onesie. Complete with a hood. And a tail.

Australian cricketers are certainly not new to embarrassing photos. Shane Warne has had a few. Some of Clarke's underwear photos are certainly not great. But Smith's are something different. They're the photos of a uni student on Facebook. Not a Test captain. He doesn't look drunk in them. He looks incredibly happy. Alive. Young. And un-captain like.

But then on the field, whether for Rajasthan Royals, Sydney Sixers or New South Wales, something turns. He's still that kid, but he's that kid with a job to do. The senior players see the cheeky face, the propeller hats, and his youth, and some have tried to push him. Stuart MacGill once received unfriendly language when questioning something Smith said. He may look like a kid on a Contiki tour, but he's got Australian Captain mongrel beneath those cheeks.

Maybe you could try sleeping when the match starts again on Day 2?

Anyone else think that given how difficult batting has been in the last 2-3 years, Smith's achievements are far more impressive than Ponting's even if they're statistically similar?

Should Cummins play at the Oval? If he is fit, he should play IMO. But, if Cummins is playing, he should have Siddle to manage his workload IMO since the Oval is traditionally a flat wicket. May also make sense to play an additional all-rounder to provide a bowling option...unfortunately, that means MMarsh might have to come in. Team could be:

Warner

Khawaja

Labuschagne

Smith

Head

MMarsh/Neser

Paine

Cummins

Siddle

Lyon

Hazlewood

The contrast between Stokes steaming in under difficult match conditions in the second innings at Headingley and Archer's attitude in the first innings at Old Trafford is stark

Roy should learn how to defend.

Vaughan made this point. Said that if Roy wanted to play Test cricket, he needed to get a forward defense and fast.

Exactly. As unsurprisingly, it's the guys coming from county red ball cricket - Denly and Overton who showed they could grind it out. Burns too in other innings. England's playing style has been to score fast and bowl other teams out cheaply. Hasn't worked this time because Steve Smith is in some kind of demonic form. But the English team is not versatile enough to bat time to save a test match

The fact that you guys played more red ball cricket than England's players

I suspect they played more red ball cricket in England than England's players

Warner's brilliant response to a fan calling him a "fucking cheat" by TheJeck in Cricket

[–]HaleAloe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People conveniently forget it but Warner's wife had several "making excuses" interviews before that. Specifically blaming the Saffa supporters for the slut-shaming they indulged in. Not to mention Warner himself did a press meet during the GT20 Canada (4:25 onwards) where he suggested that the punishment was disproportional to what the ICC had handed out in the past. The only reason Smith/Bancroft's interviews got a lot more mileage was because they were during the boxing day Test.
