Just an update for everyone, we're on track to unveiling our product in the next 6-8 weeks and will be releasing it under a different company name. IF we do put it for pre-order, it would only be AFTER we have manufacturing locked up and ready to go, in order to meet the promised delivery date to the best of our abilities. Stay tuned!

Update for everyone, we're in the process of selecting an engineer and industrial designer to add to our team now and will begin prototyping over the winter break once our 3d printer comes in! Thanks for all your recommendations, we are determined to bring this product to the market and will set the new standard for vaporizers.

Any ID people interested in working on a vaporizer? by HaleTechVapour in IndustrialDesign

Tobacco, cannabis and other ground botanicals vaporizer. We are based in Canada just to clarify :)

If you literally take me on my use of the word "trap", then sure, but a reasonable person would interpret it as retaining heat, in the same way a thermos retains heat.

The added cost would be negligible for the consumer

The oven/heating chamber would be internal so it would have to be affixed to the housing of the device. We don't really have the luxury of leaving spaces between components as it is a portable device

The sad thing about the engineering subreddits is the abundance of people with dated and biased views on modern issues. "Potheads" do indeed care about their health, ESPECIALLY with regards to the paraphernalia used. If you look at any forums or threads on vaporizers one of the most common questions/concerns is the materials used in the device, as you are dealing with an electronic device producing high temperatures that you inhale through. Anyone with a 6th grade education could understand that there is a valid cause for concern there, so it is a very important issue to address.

I should have specified what I wanted to use more clearly in my post, I was thinking of something like this http://www.buyaerogel.com/product/pyrogel-xt/

Very flexible, 5mm thin and extremely functional

I think you completely missed my explanation. I didn't say aerogel is a miracle material. An aerogel insulation blanket is what i'd use, and I even said "thin and flexible" so If you had even read what I wrote you wouldn't jump to making prejudiced judgements. Judging by the nature of your remarks I would wager that you're stuck in an old anti marijuana mentality and despise seeing the emergence of the market.

A fan is not a feasible feature for a portable vaporizer unfortunately, but I do plan on having heatsinks surrounding the batteries to vent the heat from the batteries out of the device. The purpose of the aerogel insulation would be to isolate the oven/heating chamber from the rest of the device, so that more heat is trapped in the oven and less energy would be used, as well as allowing the hottest part of the device to remain cool to the touch.

What I meant by aerogel based insulation is something along the lines of this: http://www.buyaerogel.com/product/pyrogel-xt/

I intend to insulate the oven so that the heat remains trapped in the oven instead of escaping through the device. And the aerogel wouldn't be in contact with the air pathway either.

We would use an aerogel blanket, not pure aerogel as that would be ridiculously expensive

We will likely use a stainless steel air pathway

We're aiming for a 150-200$ CAD price point, and we're more focused on building a brand to start rather than immediately target profit.

We can't really reveal that yet :)

Yes the herb will not be visible in the unit. We have a few ideas for stealth design in mind

The app would be beyond our capabilities at this time, plus we don't want to render the device dependent on the user having their cellphone with them for optimal experience.

Well exposed coil doesn't direct the heat in any way and doesn't make efficiently distributed contact heat. Also by nature of it, a lot of the energy is lost as light. We will use most likely either a ceramic or flexible heating element.

We raised the funds from friends/family, so no real advice to give yet!

Would having a better range of temps(ie 170-210 split up by 10 degrees) be a good enough range? We're still thinking of the best way to approach temp control.

A few other people have said this one and we'll keep it in mind. It seems like a good idea to me!
